That conviction is the reason Lark & Berry exists in the form it does.
Where this conviction started
Laura founded Lark & Berry in 2018, after learning about cultured diamonds during an MBA at London Business School. What began as an academic curiosity, understanding how a manufacturing process could produce a gemstone identical to one formed over a billion years underground, became the premise the whole house is built on. It isn't a marketing position we adopted after the fact; it's the reason bespoke commissioning here starts from cultured stones rather than treating them as a budget alternative to mined diamonds.
Why "real" isn't a stretch
A cultured diamond is carbon, crystallised in the same tetrahedral lattice as a mined stone, grown either by chemical vapour deposition, which builds the crystal layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas, or by high pressure, high temperature growth, which recreates the heat and pressure conditions of the earth's mantle in a press. Neither process adds anything foreign to the stone. The hardness, the refractive index, the fire and brilliance are identical to a mined diamond, because the two are chemically and structurally the same material with different formation histories. A trained gemmologist cannot separate them with a loupe alone; distinguishing origin needs specialist equipment such as growth-pattern imaging or spectroscopy, and every stone we work with is independently graded and certified by GIA or IGI, with the growth method disclosed on the certificate rather than left implicit.
No mining, and full traceability
We care about this for reasons beyond chemistry. A cultured diamond doesn't carry the extraction footprint of a mined one, no pit, no displaced earth, no supply chain running through jurisdictions where provenance can be difficult to verify. For clients who want to know where their diamond came from, the answer is as simple and as certain as it gets: it was grown, not dug from the ground, so there is no mine, no mining community and no mineral supply chain anywhere in its history. That's the traceability cultured stones offer, not a paper trail to audit, but an origin that's settled by the nature of the stone itself.
What it means for a bespoke budget
This is where the founding conviction meets the practical craft of commissioning. Mined diamond prices rise steeply and unevenly with carat size, driven by genuine geological scarcity. Cultured diamond prices rise far closer to linearly, because the cost is a manufacturing one, not a scarcity one, and that gap is widest in the carat range most bespoke engagement rings actually use. In practice, it means a given stone budget buys a noticeably larger, or noticeably better graded, cultured stone than the mined equivalent, freeing up the rest of a budget for the setting, the metal, or additional detailing a mined-diamond budget wouldn't have stretched to. Centre stones we work with typically run from around £400 up into the thousands, depending on colour, cut and size, which gives most clients real room to choose a stone on its own merits rather than settling for the largest one a budget can just about reach. The trade-offs, stated as plainly as the advantages
We don't think this case is complete without the honest half of it. A diamond's resale value is close to nil; the secondary market that exists, thinly, for mined stones essentially doesn't exist for cultured ones, and wholesale cultured diamond prices have continued to fall as production has scaled, so a stone bought today should be enjoyed at today's price rather than treated as a stable asset. And we won't pretend the case for mined diamonds is only sentimental gloss: a stone with a billion years of geological history genuinely means something to some clients, particularly for a piece meant to become a family heirloom, and that's a legitimate reason to choose mined that no amount of carat-per-pound arithmetic should argue away.
