On remodelling a piece that mattered to someone

People often arrive at this conversation already apologising. They tell us the ring was their mother's, or their grandmother's, and then, almost in the same breath, that they feel strange about wanting to change it. We hear some version of this often enough to say plainly what we think: wanting to wear something you love, rather than keep it wrapped in tissue paper in a drawer, is not a smaller act of remembrance. If anything, it's a larger one.

The apology we don't need

Nobody apologises for reupholstering a chair their grandfather sat in, or for altering a coat they inherited so it actually fits. Jewellery gets treated differently, and we understand why as it sits closer to the person than most objects do. But the same logic holds. A piece that stays in a box because the setting is dated, the style isn't yours, or it simply doesn't suit how you live isn't honouring anyone. It's just unused. What made it theirs was never the metal. It was the fact that they wore it, chose it, lived a life alongside it, and a piece you actually wear carries that forward in a way a piece you're afraid to touch cannot.

So when someone sits down with us and starts with an apology, our first job isn't to sell them anything. It's to tell them they don't need to feel that way, and mean it.

What we ask before anything changes

That said, we don't treat every remodel as a straightforward transaction, because it usually isn't one. A few things matter to us before work begins on a piece like this.

We'll always suggest documenting the original first with clear photographs of the setting, any engraving, the piece as a whole, taken before a single stone is unset. It costs nothing and it means nothing is truly lost, only changed. If there's a detail with real meaning to you, an inscription, a particular claw style, the shape of a band worn thin by decades on someone's hand, tell us, because sometimes it can be kept even when the rest of the design changes, and it's far easier to plan for that from the start than to ask for it partway through.

We'll also talk through whether you want to keep an element of the original rather than use all of it. A stone can move into a new setting while some of the old metal is set aside, kept whole as a keepsake, or worked into something small of its own. You don't have to choose between preserving everything and changing everything, most people we work with land somewhere in the middle, and that's a perfectly good place to land.

And if the piece carries a shared memory; a parent or grandparent whose ring meant something to more than one person in the family, we'd rather you had that conversation with them before the work starts than after. Not because you need permission. Because being told about a change is very different from discovering it, and the second one causes a kind of hurt that has nothing to do with the jewellery itself.

There's a longer guide to thinking through the emotional side of this decision, including how to handle disagreement within a family, on Commissioned, our independent reference site is worth a read if you want to sit with the question a little longer before you talk to us.

If you're recently bereaved, there's no clock running

If the piece came to you through a recent loss, we'd genuinely rather you took your time. Grief has a way of making decisions feel urgent when they aren't, and a redesign chosen with a clearer head, months rather than weeks out, tends to be one people are still glad of years later. That's not a sales tactic, it's the opposite of one. If you come to us in the early weeks after losing someone and want to talk it through without committing to anything, that conversation is welcome too. There's no deadline on a piece like this, and it isn't going anywhere.

When you're ready

When the moment feels right, whether that's next week or next year, we'd be glad to sit down with you, look at the piece properly, and talk through what it could become. That starts with a bespoke consultation, and there's no obligation attached to having that first conversation.
