Earrings are more than mere accessories; they're a statement that can either elevate or detract from your natural features. Finding your face shape is the key to selecting the best earrings that complement your unique contours. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the intricacies of face shapes, instruct you in detail on how to determine your own face shape and point you to the perfect earrings for accentuating your beauty.
Before delving into the world of earrings for face shapes, it's crucial to pinpoint your unique facial structure. Common face shapes include round, oval, square, heart, and diamond. Each shape possesses distinctive characteristics, and choosing earrings that harmonise with your facial features can make a significant difference.
Legendary Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn possessed round face shapes, contributing to their iconic beauty. The round face shape, associated with timeless allure, boasts softer angles and a symmetrical length-width ratio. Throughout history, rounded faces were considered symbols of harmony and balance, reflecting ideals of symmetry in art and aesthetics.
For round face shapes, choose earrings with angular shapes or elongated designs to create the illusion of length. Angular hoops, dangles, or drop earrings work well by adding vertical lines to the silhouette. Avoid overly circular styles and look for options that draw the eye downward, such as elongated drops or chandelier earrings. These earrings can help balance and flatter round face shapes, adding definition and dimension to the overall look.
Throughout history, portraits of royalty and esteemed figures frequently showcased the oval face, signifying not just physical beauty but also a sense of regal beauty and grace. From Cleopatra to Queen Nefertiti, the oval face shape has reigned supreme.
For oval face shapes, versatility is key. Soft curves or geometric shapes in earrings complement the face's natural contours. Hoops, teardrops, and studs work well, while longer dangling earrings can subtly elongate the face. Avoid overly long or narrow styles to maintain balance. Oval faces have the freedom to experiment with various earring designs, making it easy to find the perfect pair.
In ancient Chinese culture, square shaped faces were often seen as a symbol of honesty and integrity, embodying the principles of strength and stability. The square face shape, characterised by bold, defined features, holds a captivating history in the world of beauty aesthetics.
For square face shapes, choose earrings with rounded or curved designs to soften the angles and balance the features. Hoop earrings with gentle curves or teardrop shapes work well to complement the strong jawline. Avoid angular styles and opt for softer lines to enhance the natural beauty of square faces.
Famous for her heart-shaped face, Elizabeth Taylor, the Hollywood icon, often adorned herself with stunning jewellery that accentuated her elegant features, contributing to her timeless glamour. The heart face shape, a symbol of romantic allure, has left an indelible mark on beauty ideals throughout the ages.
For heart-shaped faces, go for earrings that draw attention downward to balance the wider forehead and narrower chin. Teardrop or chandelier designs work well by adding volume around the jawline. Dangling earrings with curves or rounded shapes soften angles, while delicate details can enhance cheekbones. Avoid wide or angular styles that accentuate the forehead. Choose earrings that add volume to the lower face for a harmonious look.
Modern stars like Rihanna, and going back to the golden age, someone like Grace Kelly, are known for having striking, diamond-shaped faces. Both starlets captivate audiences with their timeless beauty and enchanting style.
For diamond-shaped faces, choose earrings that balance the narrow chin and wider cheekbones while softening the angular jawline. Pick styles with curves or rounded shapes like teardrops or hoops to complement the cheekbones and soften angles. Dangling earrings with delicate designs draw attention to the cheekbones, creating harmony. Avoid overly wide or angular earrings that may exaggerate cheekbone width. Select earrings that add width to the lower face for a flattering look.
Enhancing your features means finding the right earrings. For a round face, choose long drop or dangle styles to elongate and slim your look.

]]>In the realm of engagement rings, the choice between moissanite and lab-grown diamonds has become increasingly prevalent. Both offer exquisite beauty and ethical alternatives to traditional mined diamonds. Yet, discerning between the two can be a daunting task for couples seeking the perfect symbol of their commitment.
Within this thorough investigation, we examine the roots, attributes, and nuances of moissanite and lab diamonds, providing you with insights to arrive at a decision that resonates with your desires and values.
Moissanite, an extraordinary gemstone, boasts a fascinating origin story that links it to the depths of outer space. Initially found within a meteorite crater, this naturally occurring silicon carbide has captivated many with its distinct allure. Renowned for its brilliance, hardness, and exceptional optical properties, moissanite has become a sought-after option in engagement rings, presenting a stunning diamond alternative.
The scarcity of natural moissanite spurred the creation of lab-grown versions, widening the availability of this radiant gem and spreading its brilliance to countless jewellery lovers.
The story of moissanite stone shines brightly with fascination and exploration, starting with Henri Moissan's discovery in an Arizona meteorite crater in 1893. At first, these dazzling crystals were mistaken for diamonds because of their brilliant sparkle and fiery glow. Moissan's accidental find sparked his curiosity, leading him to realise that he had stumbled upon a remarkable new mineral. Initially believed to be a type of diamond from Earth, further examination revealed moissanite's extraterrestrial origins.
The unique properties of moissanite caught the discerning eyes of Charles and Colvard, who recognised the gem's potential to captivate a wider audience. In 1998, they achieved a breakthrough by successfully developing a method to create gem-quality moissanite. This marked the inception of moissanite's popularity as an enchanting and affordable alternative to traditional diamonds.
Fast forward to the present day, and moissanite proudly stands as an ethically sourced gem, offering an eco-conscious choice for those seeking an alternative to conventional diamonds. With advancements in technology and a dedicated commitment to sustainability, moissanite emerges as a symbol of responsible luxury, embodying the spirit of a gem for the modern era.
The intriguing history of lab-grown diamonds traces back to the mid-20th century, where scientists embarked on a journey to replicate the Earth's geological forces in a controlled environment. Today, these gems are brought to life using cutting-edge technological methods that mimic the natural diamond-growing process, enabling the recreation of the awe-inspiring beauty found deep within the Earth.
The jewellery industry witnessed a pivotal moment in the 1950s with the introduction of the first commercially available lab-grown diamond. This marked a transformative shift, laying the foundation for an ethical and sustainable alternative to earth-mined diamonds.
“Lab diamonds have technically been around since the 50s, but it wasn’t until about 2006 that they started to enter the luxury jewellery market in earnest.” added Laura Chavez, Lark & Berry founder.
“And it wouldn’t be until years later that lab diamonds started to become competitive in the engagement ring sector. 2006 was also a pivotal moment in western culture for the awareness of mined diamonds’ potential harms – that was when ‘Blood Diamond’ the movie came out, and it was when I became aware of how buying jewellery guilt-free wasn’t so simple. Years later, in 2018, when I started Lark & Berry after discovering lab grown for myself, I vowed I’d only do so if I could be an exclusively lab grown designer brand. Thankfully, we made it happen, and became the first fine designer in the world to use only lab grown.”
Moissanite and lab-grown diamonds, while both stunning gemstones, differ significantly in their chemical composition. Moissanite is composed of silicon carbide (SiC), a compound consisting of silicon and carbon atoms arranged in a unique crystal structure. This structure gives moissanite its distinct properties, including exceptional hardness and brilliance.
On the other hand, lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to natural diamonds, consisting solely of carbon atoms arranged in a cubic crystal lattice. This similarity results in lab-grown diamonds possessing the same hardness, brilliance, and optical properties as their naturally occurring counterparts.
While both moissanite and lab-grown diamonds offer brilliant alternatives to natural diamonds, their differing chemical compositions provide each with its own distinct characteristics and appeal.
Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral, but most of the moissanite used in jewellery today is created in a lab setting through a process called high-temperature synthesis. This involves heating silicon carbide to extreme temperatures until it crystallises into moissanite gemstones.
Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are created using either chemical vapour deposition (CVD) or high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) methods. In CVD, carbon-rich gasses break down and accumulate on a diamond seed, forming a diamond crystal layer by layer. HPHT involves subjecting a diamond seed to high pressure and temperature, causing carbon atoms to crystallise around the seed.
While both moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments, moissanite is specifically synthesised from silicon carbide, while lab-grown diamonds replicate the natural formation process of diamonds using carbon.
In the comparison between moissanite and lab diamonds, a critical consideration is the colour spectrum. Moissanite tends to display more colourful flashes, whereas lab diamonds exude a colourless purity, reflecting a timeless and classic beauty. As for clarity, both moissanite and lab diamonds can attain exceptional grades, providing a diverse range of options to suit individual preferences.
One of the key factors driving the popularity of moissanite and lab diamonds is their affordability compared to natural diamonds. Moissanite, being more abundant, often comes at a lower price point, making it an attractive option for those seeking budget-friendly alternatives. However, lab diamonds, while competitively priced, offer the allure of genuine diamond luxury without the ethical concerns associated with mined diamonds.
“I’ve been impressed with moissanite’s growth in the engagement ring space, and I absolutely support it as a more ethical alternative to mined diamonds,” commented Laura Chavez, Lark & Berry founder.
“We’re keeping an eye on this gemstone and are always open to considering expanding our range to include more ethical stones options – but I think especially when it comes to the engagement ring market, there’s just nothing that can truly take the place of diamonds. Their shine is just more brilliant, diamonds are the hardest rock on Earth, and they just have so much beautiful symbolism of ever-lasting love for so many. I just think diamonds are going to remain the premiere stone for engagement pieces, and that’s why, as a brand, Lark & Berry is so proud to use only lab-grown diamonds. It’s why we feature them so prominently for engagement in our marketing. We want everyone to make the switch from mined diamonds, especially seeing as I don’t think diamonds are going away any time soon as the top choice.”
When comparing brilliance, both moissanite and lab-grown diamonds shine brightly. Moissanite dazzles with its exceptional refractive index, creating a stunning array of rainbow-like colours. Meanwhile, lab-grown diamonds, featuring meticulously cut facets, emit a brilliance comparable to natural diamonds. Ultimately, choosing between the two comes down to personal taste and the desired aesthetic for your jewellery piece.
When considering durability in engagement rings, both lab-grown diamonds and moissanite offer impressive resilience. Lab-grown diamonds, sharing the same chemical composition as natural diamonds, are renowned for their hardness, scoring a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale. This means they are highly resistant to scratches and everyday wear, making them an excellent choice for long-term wear in engagement rings.
Moissanite, although slightly less hard than diamonds, still ranks high on the Mohs scale at around 9.25. This makes moissanite highly durable and suitable for everyday wear, with minimal risk of scratching or damage. Ultimately, both lab-grown diamonds and moissanite provide couples with durable options for engagement rings that can withstand the rigors of daily life with ease.
Moissanite, with its extraterrestrial origins and captivating brilliance, stands as an alluring option steeped in history. Conversely, lab-grown diamonds, a testament to human ingenuity, represent a harmonious blend of luxury and ethical responsibility.
As trends in the jewellery industry progress, there is a noticeable inclination towards lab-grown diamonds. With advancements in technology and a growing awareness of environmental impact, couples are increasingly drawn to the allure of genuine diamonds without the ethical concerns associated with traditional mining. The statistics reveal a changing landscape, highlighting the rising popularity of lab-grown diamonds in the engagement ring market.
While moissanite boasts its own charm with affordability and a unique sparkle, the ascendancy of lab-grown diamonds suggests a shift towards a more sustainable and ethically conscious future.
Whether captivated by the cosmic allure of moissanite or enticed by the sustainable luxury of lab-grown diamond engagement rings, both options offer a spectrum of choices for couples to express their love in a way that aligns with their values and preferences. Ultimately, the beauty of this decision lies in the eye of the beholder, where the story behind the gem becomes an integral part of the enduring narrative of love.
]]>Choosing the perfect engagement ring is an exciting and memorable experience. However, the financial aspect of this significant purchase can often be overwhelming. In this guide, we’ll examine engagement ring costs, explore the average expenses, debunk common myths, provide money-saving tips, and shed light on the emergence of lab-grown engagement rings as an ethical and cost-effective alternative, addressing the age-old question of "how much should an engagement ring cost?"
The cost of an engagement ring varies based on personal preferences and financial considerations. Traditionally, the guideline of spending two to three months' salary has been suggested, but this is subjective. Couples should communicate openly about their expectations and financial priorities. Some prioritize a significant budget for the ring as an investment in a meaningful symbol, while others prefer a more modest approach, emphasising sentimental value over cost. Ultimately, the worth of an engagement ring lies in its emotional significance to the couple, reflecting their unique relationship and shared values.
The outdated notion that an engagement ring should cost two months' salary is just that – a myth. It's crucial to set a budget that aligns with your financial situation rather than adhering to arbitrary rules. Personal financial stability and shared financial goals should guide your decision-making.
This question is a common inquiry within the jewellery industry, especially when directed at professionals working with lab-grown diamonds: "Why should I opt for lab-grown when there's no resale value?". There's a misconception that an engagement ring's resale value should be a significant consideration. In reality, engagement rings typically have a lower resale value than their original purchase price – that goes for mined AND lab-grown, not to mention lab-grown is also a real diamond and is, in effect, the same concern when trying to re-sell. Instead of focusing on potential resale, it's more meaningful to choose a ring that holds sentimental value and symbolises the unique bond between partners.
Contrary to common belief, the price of a diamond doesn't solely determine its worth. Other factors, such as the diamond's origin, ethical considerations, and personal significance, contribute to its true value. Understanding these aspects allows for a more meaningful and informed choice.
While the element of surprise has its romantic allure, the idea that an engagement ring must be a complete surprise may not align with modern preferences. Many couples today opt for a collaborative approach, discussing ring preferences and styles together to ensure the chosen ring resonates with the recipient's taste and preferences.
While a larger diamond may seem like the epitome of luxury, it's essential to prioritise quality over size. A smaller, high-quality diamond can outshine a larger one with imperfections. Consider the cut, clarity, and colour for a more brilliant and visually appealing ring.
The first chapter in our exploration of engagement ring costs is the metal choice, a decision that not only influences aesthetics but also significantly impacts the overall expense. Platinum, renowned for its lustrous beauty and durability, tends to command a higher price compared to its golden counterparts. However, the allure of alternative metals, such as palladium, introduces an exciting twist, offering a budget-friendly option that doesn't compromise on elegance. Gold, of course, is a classic choice and lands somewhere in the middle, budget-wise – though it depends on whether you go the 14K or 18K route.
Did you know - the average cost of an engagement ring in the UK is 0.50 to 1.00 carats, and in the United States is around 1 carat?
The second chapter unravels the mystique behind the gemstone, a captivating centrepiece that elevates the ring's allure. The type, cut, colour, and clarity of the gemstone intricately weave into the narrative of cost. While traditional diamonds, with their timeless sparkle, often carry a steeper price tag, alternative centre stones like sapphires emerge as cost-effective protagonists, promising a budget-friendly alternative without sacrificing the captivating beauty that adorns the ring.
Interestingly, celebrities have often set trends in engagement ring styles, from the iconic Tiffany setting popularized by Audrey Hepburn to the trend of colored gemstones sparked by Kate Middleton's sapphire engagement ring.
The third and final chapter in our exploration is the ring design and setting, where the story of craftsmanship and cost gracefully intertwine. Elaborate and intricate designs, reminiscent of timeless artistry, naturally come with a higher price tag, reflecting the skill and dedication poured into their creation. On the contrary, simpler settings or classic designs offer a more budget-friendly avenue, inviting those seeking elegance without the weighty financial commitment.
Before stepping into a jewellery store, establish a realistic engagement ring budget based on your financial situation. This will help narrow down options and prevent overspending.
Before such an important shopping excursion, invest time in educating yourself about the various aspects of engagement rings. Understand the Four Cs—cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight—so you can make informed decisions. This knowledge equips you to assess diamonds or alternative gemstones more critically, ensuring that your purchase aligns with both your preferences and budget.
This is a big commitment! So take heed - it's crucial to establish a realistic budget based on your financial situation. This preliminary step will not only guide your choices but also prevent the temptation of overspending as you explore engagement ring options.
Consider thinking beyond traditional diamonds when selecting the perfect engagement ring. Gemstones like sapphires and emeralds not only offer unique and vibrant beauty but also come with a considerably lower price tag, allowing you to stay within budget while still achieving a stunning look.
Choosing a slightly smaller carat size can have a significant impact on the overall cost of the engagement ring. By focusing on the cut and clarity of the gemstone, you can maintain visual appeal without the hefty price tag often associated with larger stones.
Collaborating with a skilled jeweller to create a bespoke engagement ring can be a financially savvy choice. This approach allows you to tailor the design, metal, gemstone, and overall aesthetic to match your preferences and budget. Opting for bespoke rings provides cost-saving advantages as you have control over the materials used, ensuring a more personalised and financially aligned symbol of your commitment.
As societal awareness about ethical sourcing grows, lab-grown diamonds have become a popular and cost-effective alternative. These diamonds are created in controlled environments, eliminating concerns about unethical mining practices and providing a more budget-friendly option.
Lab-grown diamonds not only offer substantial savings upfront but also provide an opportunity for couples to invest in the symbolic and emotional aspects of their engagement, such as planning a memorable proposal, a dream wedding, or building a life together. The financial flexibility afforded by lab-grown diamonds enhances the overall experience of embarking on the journey of eternal commitment without compromising on the beauty and significance of the chosen symbol of love.
By choosing a lab-grown diamond, you can ensure the ethical sourcing of your precious gem. This addresses concerns related to unethical mining practices and aligns with the growing societal awareness of the importance of ethical sourcing in the diamond industry
Lab-grown diamonds contribute to a lower environmental impact, presenting a more sustainable choice for environmentally conscious individuals. This eco-friendly aspect adds an extra layer of appeal for those seeking a symbol of love that reflects their commitment to values aligned with environmental responsibility.
Beyond the initial price tag, there are key considerations that can significantly impact your overall financial strategy. Engagement ring insurance and financing options are two aspects of ring costs that buyers commonly consider.
Once you've made the investment in an engagement ring, consider getting insurance to protect against loss, theft, or damage. This additional cost is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Choose an insurance policy that specifically covers jewellery and inquire about the coverage limits, deductibles, and any conditions that may apply. It's advisable to update the appraisal value of the ring periodically to ensure adequate coverage
Some jewellery stores offer financing plans. While convenient, it's crucial to understand the terms, interest rates, and potential impact on your financial situation before committing to a financing option. Carefully review the repayment terms and any hidden fees that may be associated with the financing plan. Assess your budget to determine if the monthly payments align with your financial goals, and consider alternative financing options, such as personal loans or credit cards, to find the most cost-effective solution.
Selecting an engagement ring extends beyond mere aesthetics; it's a journey woven with historical significance, modern innovation, and personal sentiments. By delving into cost influences, dispelling myths, exploring money-saving tips, and considering ethical alternatives like lab-grown diamonds, you embark on a path of informed decision-making that transcends tradition.
Recognising that choosing an engagement ring is a profound expression of love is perhaps the most crucial aspect. The love story embedded in the design, ethical considerations, and budget-conscious decisions all contribute to its true value. As you commence the journey of selecting the perfect ring, keep in mind that every choice enhances the richness of your story. Whether it's the sparkle of a lab-grown diamond, the uniqueness of a bespoke creation, or the symbolism rooted in historical traditions, your ring evolves into a timeless testament to shared love and commitment. Beyond the price tag, its value is immeasurable – a reflection that true love is indeed priceless.
]]>Diamond earrings are not only a stunning accessory but also an investment that deserves proper care to maintain their brilliance over time. In this comprehensive guide, we aim to give you the essential steps on how to clean earrings, explore the reasons why caring for them is crucial, compare professional and DIY cleaning methods, and offer tips on the frequency of cleaning.
Regular cleaning is vital for maintaining the allure of your diamond earrings. These precious gems accumulate dirt, oil, and debris over time from daily wear, impacting their brilliance. Keeping them clean not only enhances their aesthetic appeal but also ensures their longevity.
This maintenance prevents the buildup of substances that can dull the lustre, allowing your earrings to shine brightly and maintain their pristine beauty. Additionally, routine cleaning contributes to the overall hygiene of your jewellery, reducing the risk of skin irritation or discomfort caused by accumulated residues. It also safeguards the structural integrity of your earrings, preventing potential durability issues by addressing dirt and debris in intricate settings.
Remember, a little care goes a long way in preserving the beauty and brilliance of your diamond earrings, allowing you to enjoy them for years to come.
For frequent wearers, a monthly cleaning routine is wise to prevent the gradual buildup of residues that can diminish brilliance over time. This consistent maintenance not only preserves visual appeal but also safeguards against potential long-term damage caused by accumulated dirt, oils, and debris.
For those who reserve diamond earrings for special occasions or wear them infrequently, cleaning every few months is sufficient. Despite less frequent wear, periodic cleaning is essential to ensure your earrings remain in pristine condition, ready to dazzle whenever they adorn your ears.
When deciding how often to clean your diamond earrings, striking a balance is crucial. Avoid overcleaning with abrasive methods or harsh chemicals, as it can lead to unnecessary wear and tear. Conversely, neglecting regular cleaning may result in a gradual loss of the diamonds' natural brilliance. Find a middle ground that caters to your specific needs, ensuring your diamond earrings shine brightly while preserving their beauty over time.
Before we dive into modern cleaning methods, it's essential to consider whether to opt for professional cleaning or handle the task yourself. Professional services at jewellery stores, like ultrasonic or steam cleaning, ensure thoroughness and security. Lark & Berry adds convenience with complimentary cleaning at our London store. On the other hand, DIY, at-home cleaning methods offer convenience and cost-effectiveness, but it's crucial to choose gentle and safe techniques to prevent damage. Decide based on your preferences, budget, and desired care level for your jewellery.
Ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency sound waves to generate microscopic bubbles in a cleaning solution. The rapid formation and collapse of these bubbles create tiny shock waves, dislodging dirt, oil, and debris from the surface of the diamonds and within intricate settings.
This process is highly effective, reaching areas that may be challenging to clean with manual methods. However, it's crucial to note that while ultrasonic cleaning is suitable for most diamonds, it may not be suitable for certain gemstones or fragile settings. Therefore, it's essential to consult with professionals before opting for this method.
Steam cleaning involves using high-pressure steam to remove contaminants from the surface of diamond earrings. The process begins by heating water to produce steam, which is then directed through a nozzle onto the jewellery. The force of the steam, combined with its heat, effectively dissolves oils and removes dirt. Steam cleaning is particularly useful for eliminating residues from oils and lotions that may accumulate on the diamonds over time. Like ultrasonic cleaning, steam cleaning is generally safe for diamonds, but it's essential to ensure that the earrings can withstand the heat and pressure involved in the process. Professional jewellers are equipped to assess the suitability of your specific earrings for steam cleaning.
Both ultrasonic and steam cleaning methods are best performed by trained professionals who understand the intricacies of different metals, settings, and gemstones. They can tailor the cleaning process to the specific characteristics of your diamond earrings, ensuring a thorough yet gentle restoration of their brilliance. Additionally, professionals can inspect your earrings for any signs of damage or loose stones during the cleaning process, providing a comprehensive approach to maintaining the integrity of your precious jewellery.
To clean your diamond earrings at home, start with a mild dish soap and warm water solution. Soak the earrings for 20-30 minutes to dissolve oils and debris. Gently scrub using a soft toothbrush to prevent scratching, then rinse the earrings thoroughly and pat dry with a clean, soft cloth.
For a slightly stronger option, use an ammonia solution. Mix one part ammonia with six parts water. Soak your diamond earrings briefly, but be cautious to avoid prolonged exposure, as excessive ammonia can damage certain metals. Rinse thoroughly and ensure complete drying to remove any residual cleaning solution.
One popular device gaining traction in the realm of DIY diamond earring care is the ultrasonic jewellery cleaner for home use. These compact and user-friendly machines employ ultrasonic waves to create microscopic bubbles in a cleaning solution. The rapid formation and collapse of these bubbles generate tiny shockwaves, effectively dislodging dirt and debris from intricate settings. Ultrasonic cleaners are known for their efficiency, reaching areas that may be challenging to clean manually. However, it's essential to ensure that your diamond earrings are compatible with this method and to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for optimal results.
For a more advanced at-home cleaning experience, steam cleaners designed for jewellery offer a powerful and efficient option. These devices use high-pressure steam to remove contaminants from the surface of diamond earrings. The force of the steam, combined with its heat, dissolves oils and removes dirt, providing a thorough and convenient cleaning process. As with ultrasonic cleaners, it's crucial to confirm the suitability of your earrings for steam cleaning and to adhere to the device's guidelines for safe usage.
For those seeking a comprehensive solution, jewellery cleaning kits are available online, often containing a combination of cleaning solutions, brushes, and polishing cloths. These kits are curated to address the specific needs of diamond earrings, offering a well-rounded approach to maintenance. They are user-friendly and typically come with detailed instructions for optimal use.
To further enhance your cleaning process, consider these tips:
When cleaning your diamond earrings, steer clear of harsh chemicals, including bleach. These substances can compromise the integrity of both the diamonds and the metal settings, potentially diminishing their shine over time. Opt for mild, jewellery-specific cleansers or a mixture of warm water and a gentle dish soap for a safe and effective cleaning solution.
To prevent any inadvertent scratching during the cleaning process, opt for soft-bristled brushes, such as a toothbrush with gentle bristles. Avoid abrasive materials that may scratch the surface of your jewellery. Gentle, circular motions will effectively remove dirt and grime without causing any damage to your precious stones or their settings.
After cleaning, take care to thoroughly dry your diamond earrings with a soft, lint-free cloth. This prevents water spots and ensures that no moisture lingers in the intricate settings. Proper drying helps maintain the brilliance of your diamonds and protects the metal from any potential corrosion.
Make it a habit to routinely inspect your diamond earrings for any signs of wear, loose stones, or potential damage. Regular scrutiny allows you to catch any issues early on, preventing further complications. If you notice any concerns, seek professional assistance promptly to address and resolve them.
Understanding how often to clean your diamond earrings is pivotal in preserving their beauty and ensuring they remain a timeless accessory. Whether you choose professional services or a DIY approach, incorporating regular and gentle cleaning methods will undoubtedly contribute to maintaining the allure of your diamond earrings for years to come. This comprehensive approach to care guarantees that your cherished accessories continue to sparkle with the same brilliance that captivated you from the start.
At Lark & Berry, we provide expert earring cleaning services alongside an exquisite collection of lab-grown diamond earrings. Meticulously crafted with a commitment to precision and ethical sourcing, these lab-grown diamonds exhibit remarkable clarity and brilliance comparable to their mined counterparts.
]]>Adorning your ears with carefully curated stacks of earrings is an art form that has gained immense popularity in recent times. The trend of stacking earrings for multiple piercings allows for creative self-expression, and with a variety of earring types to choose from, the possibilities are endless.
This guide takes a deep dive into the realm of earring stacking. We'll explore the top earring types and piercings suitable for stacking, give an overview of each, and provide useful tips for a successful earring stacking experience.
Earring stacking refers to the practice of wearing multiple earrings in one ear or across both ears in a layered or stacked arrangement. This trend allows individuals to express their style and creativity by mixing and matching different types of earrings, such as studs, hoops, cuffs, huggies, and dangly earrings.
People may stack earrings in various ways, such as having multiple piercings in a single ear and adorning each piercing with a different earring or combining earrings of different sizes and styles for a more eclectic look. The goal is to create a unique and personalised aesthetic that suits one's taste and complements their overall style.
Earring stacking has become a popular trend in the world of fashion and accessories, providing individuals with the opportunity to experiment with various combinations and express their individuality through their ear jewellery choices.
Earring stacking offers a unique way to express your style, turning your ear into a canvas for creativity. Each piercing type contributes to the overall composition, allowing for endless possibilities, from subtle elegance to bold statements. Whether it's the classic lobe or the adventurous helix, the choice of piercings plays a crucial role. While you can get creative with stacking earrings, some popular ear piercings that are commonly used for earring stacking include:
As mentioned earlier, traditional lobe piercings are versatile and can accommodate a wide range of earrings. You can mix and match studs, hoops, dangles, and ear cuffs in multiple lobe piercings for a playful and stylish effect.
Helix piercings, located on the upper cartilage of the ear, offer an excellent canvas for stacking smaller hoops, studs, and cartilage cuffs. You can create a cascading or ascending pattern for a visually appealing look.
The conch, situated in the inner part of the ear, allows for larger and more noticeable jewellery. Stacking hoops or studs in the conch area can add a bold statement to your earring ensemble.
The tragus, that small flap of cartilage covering the ear canal, is perfect for stacking with small and intricate earrings. Consider combining delicate studs or tiny hoops for an understated yet stylish look.
Nestled in the inner cartilage of the ear, rook piercings provide a unique and less common spot for stacking earrings. Mix and match smaller pieces for a distinctive and eye-catching appearance.
Positioned on the front side of the ear's cartilage, forward helix piercings offer a modern and edgy space for stacking with small studs or hoops. Experiment with different placements to find the most flattering combination.
While not as common for stacking, the daith (innermost cartilage fold of the ear) can still be incorporated into earring stacks with creative placement using smaller, complementary earrings.
To achieve a harmonious and visually appealing stacked ear ensemble, it's essential to understand the characteristics of different earring types. From subtle studs to daring drop earrings, and the edgy charm of ear cuffs, each style plays a crucial role in the layered symphony of jewellery. Together, these elements form the building blocks for creating a captivating and well-balanced stacked earring look.
Small and discreet, stud earrings are perfect for laying the foundation of a stacked earring look. These minimalist earrings come in various shapes and designs, such as classic diamonds, geometric patterns, or tiny symbols. Their subtle nature allows for easy pairing with other statement pieces without overwhelming the overall ensemble.
Hoop earrings are a versatile choice for stacking, providing a snug fit around the earlobe. Their compact size makes them ideal for layering, and they come in a variety of designs, from simple and sleek to adorned with gemstones or intricate patterns. Huggie hoops can be positioned at different points along the ear, creating a dynamic and visually appealing composition.
Elegant and graceful, drop earrings introduce length and movement to a stacked ear ensemble. Ranging from delicate dangles to more elaborate designs, drop earrings can be strategically placed within the stack to draw attention and add a touch of sophistication. The combination of studs or hoops with varying lengths of drop earrings creates a dynamic and visually appealing arrangement.
Ear cuffs add an edgy and contemporary flair to a stacked earring look. These non-piercing accessories gently hug the ear, creating a distinctive style. Ear cuffs often come in various designs, including minimalist bands, embellished styles, or even elaborate, statement pieces. Incorporating ear cuffs into your stack allows for creativity and uniqueness in your overall earring arrangement.
Start by selecting a focal point for your ear stack. This could be a statement earring or a hoop that will be the main focus. This will help you build around it with complementary pieces.
Pay attention to the size and balance of your earrings. Mix and match sizes to create visual interest. For example, if you have a larger statement earring as your focal point, balance it with smaller studs or huggie hoops on the other ear or in additional piercings.
Coordinate the metals and styles of your earrings to create a cohesive look. If you prefer a more uniform appearance, stick to the same metal or choose pieces with similar design elements. Alternatively, you can mix metals for a more eclectic and trendy look.
Don't limit yourself to stacking earrings only on your earlobes. Experiment with different ear placements, such as helix, tragus, or cartilage piercings, to add variety and uniqueness to your stack. Just ensure that the earrings complement each other and contribute to an overall harmonious look.
Take a step back and assess your overall ear stack. Make adjustments as needed to achieve a curated and balanced appearance. Avoid overcrowding your ears with too many pieces; instead, aim for a harmonious combination that enhances your personal style.
Earring stacking has become more than just choosing accessories. It's now an art form that allows people to create interesting stories through their ear decorations. Whether it's mixing different shapes and sizes, combining metals, or trying out unconventional piercings, this trend provides a dynamic way to express yourself. In the constantly changing world of earring stacking, trends open the door to limitless creativity, offering countless options for those who want to showcase their individual fashion journey.
The prevailing trend leans towards embracing diversity in metals and textures. As we touched upon earlier, stacking earrings with a mix of gold, silver, and other materials creates a visually engaging and eclectic look. Textured surfaces, from hammered finishes to intricate patterns, add depth and uniqueness to the stack.
Asymmetric stacking is gaining momentum, breaking away from symmetrical arrangements. This trend involves purposefully mismatching earrings, playing with varying lengths, shapes, and designs, adding an element of spontaneity and individuality to the overall aesthetic.
Simple and classy remains a good way to go, offering a counterbalance to bold and elaborate stacks. Delicate studs and simple hoops, carefully arranged for a refined look, showcase the beauty of understated sophistication, resonating with those who prefer a more subtle yet chic approach to earring stacking.
A noticeable shift towards nature-inspired earring stacks is observed, incorporating motifs such as leaves, flowers, and organic shapes. This trend brings a touch of the outdoors to the stack and aligns with the growing interest in sustainable and eco-friendly fashion choices.

]]>Choosing the perfect engagement ring involves considering various elements, and one of the most crucial aspects is the engagement ring setting. This guide provides an in-depth look into what diamond settings are, their purpose, what components they're made of, and types of ring settings while incorporating fascinating historical insights and celebrity choices.
Beyond the aesthetics, understanding these intricacies is essential for making an informed decision. Let's explore the world of engagement ring settings, exploring the nuances and uncovering the diverse options available.
The engagement ring setting serves as the foundation that cradles the diamond, consisting of distinct components that contribute to both the visual appeal and stability of the ring. This intricate arrangement typically includes prongs, bezels, or channels that secure the diamond in place, allowing light to interact with the stone and enhance its brilliance. A closer look at these components enhances our understanding of this crucial aspect of ring selection.
The choice of a particular stone setting style can greatly influence the overall aesthetic of the engagement ring, ranging from classic and timeless to modern and avant-garde. Additionally, the setting plays a crucial role in protecting the diamond from daily wear and tear while showcasing its unique features. Couples often choose engagement ring settings based on personal preferences, lifestyle, and the desired level of maintenance, creating a meaningful symbol that reflects their commitment and style.
Prongs, those delicate metal claws that secure the diamond, play a vital role in the aesthetics and security of the engagement ring. What couples appreciate about prong settings is their ability to maximize the visibility of the diamond, allowing more light to interact with the stone, thus enhancing its brilliance. Additionally, prongs provide a secure grip on the diamond, highlighting its beauty while ensuring it stays firmly in place.
Did you know? According to recent industry statistics, prong settings remain the top choice for engagement rings, with approximately 60% of couples favoring this classic setting.
The shank, or band, is the part of the ring that connects the setting to the finger. What couples appreciate about the shank is its contribution to overall comfort. Whether opting for a sleek and slim design or a more substantial and intricate one, the shank plays a crucial role in balancing comfort with style. It becomes a personal choice, where individuals can select a shank that aligns with their preferences and ensures a comfortable fit.
The head of the engagement ring setting, situated at the top, is responsible for holding the diamond securely in place. Couples value the head not just for its practical role but also for its impact on the overall elegance of the ring. A well-designed head not only secures the diamond but also complements its shape, adding an extra layer of sophistication to the entire piece.
The gallery, an open area beneath the diamond, is where light comes into play. What couples appreciate about the gallery is its role in allowing light to interact with the diamond from various angles. This not only enhances the brilliance of the stone but also creates a mesmerizing play of light and shadows. The gallery, often an overlooked feature, adds depth and character to the engagement ring, making it truly captivating.
Bezel settings have a rich history dating back to ancient times when they were used to secure precious gemstones. Today, they continue to captivate those seeking a blend of style and durability.
Characterized by a metal rim surrounding the diamond, the bezel setting offers both protection and a modern aesthetic. Particularly suitable for active individuals, it complements round and princess-cut diamonds.
Featuring closely set small diamonds, the pave setting creates a dazzling, paved appearance. While visually striking, it requires careful maintenance to ensure the stones remain securely in place.
Celebs like Beyoncé and Blake Lively have been spotted flaunting pave-set engagement rings, contributing to the popularity of this dazzling setting.
The channel setting finds its roots in the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by geometric and linear designs. This setting exudes a sleek and modern appearance, with channels securely holding diamonds in place, symbolizing the stability and enduring nature of a relationship.
Embedding diamonds within the band, the channel setting delivers a seamless and sleek look. Ideal for those with active lifestyles, it pairs well with round and princess-cut diamonds. Channel settings have seen a surge in popularity among modern couples, drawn to their contemporary aesthetic and practicality.
Widely popularized in the 1920s during the Art Deco period, the halo setting draws inspiration from vintage and antique designs, particularly from the Georgian and Victorian eras. This setting is known for its opulence and luxury. The smaller diamonds surrounding the center stone create a halo, enhancing the brilliance and making the main gemstone appear larger.
The halo setting surrounds the center diamond with a halo of smaller diamonds, enhancing the overall appearance and creating the illusion of a larger center stone. Its versatility makes it compatible with various diamond shapes.
In contrast, the tension setting is a more contemporary innovation that emerged in the late 20th century. This setting style is characterized by a modern and minimalist design where the diamond appears to be suspended between the metal shanks without the use of prongs or bezels. Often chosen to symbolize unity and strength, the tension setting emphasizes the connection between the metal and the gem, mirroring the bond between partners.
Utilizing pressure to hold the diamond between the shank's two ends, the tension setting boasts a modern and minimalistic aesthetic. However, considerations for resizing and maintenance are essential.
Recent industry insights indicate a rising trend in personalized engravings on engagement ring settings. Approximately 40% of couples are opting for unique and sentimental engravings, adding an extra layer of personalization to their ring choices. Whether it's a special date, a meaningful quote, or initials, couples are finding creative ways to make their engagement rings even more special and reflective of their unique love stories. This trend highlights a shift towards couples seeking not only distinctive designs but also personalized touches that make their rings truly one-of-a-kind.
And on the subject of what diamond shapes couples are choosing most these days? Round-cut diamonds have emerged as the most popular choice, influencing a surge in demand for settings that accentuate their brilliance.
The shape of the chosen diamond influences the overall aesthetics of the engagement ring. Different settings complement specific diamond shapes, creating a harmonious visual appeal. For example, prong settings, with their versatile design, work well with most diamond shapes, providing a classic and timeless look. On the other hand, bezel settings showcase the beauty of round and princess-cut diamonds, enhancing their elegance with a protective metal rim.
When selecting an engagement ring setting, it's crucial to consider lifestyle factors. For individuals with active lifestyles, secure settings like bezel or channel might be preferable, as they offer added protection to the diamond. On the contrary, those who prioritize aesthetics might find allure in intricate designs such as pave or halo settings. These settings not only enhance the visual appeal but also add a touch of sophistication to the overall design.
The choice of metal for the engagement ring significantly contributes to its appearance and character. Popular metal options include white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum, each imparting a unique visual appeal to the ring. White gold, for instance, offers a modern and sleek look, while yellow gold exudes a classic warmth. Rose gold, with its romantic undertones, adds a touch of elegance, and platinum, known for its durability, imparts a timeless and luxurious feel. Couples can tailor their choice of metal to align with their personal style and preferences.
Before we go, it would be timely to point out that there's a notable shift in recent trends that adds a compelling layer to the engagement ring saga.
A growing number of couples are now opting for lab-grown diamonds as a commendable alternative to mined diamonds. This progressive choice is fueled by considerations of ethics and environmental consciousness. Lab-grown diamonds, cultivated under controlled conditions, mirror the chemical and physical attributes of mined diamonds while offering a sustainable and responsible option.
As you navigate the myriad options for engagement ring settings, consider the profound impact of this evolving landscape. The choice of a lab-grown diamond not only adds a contemporary dimension to your selection but also contributes to a positive shift in the jewelry industry.

]]>Selecting the ideal engagement ring requires a thoughtful evaluation of multiple elements, and among the pivotal considerations is the cut or shape of the diamond. Within this extensive handbook, we will intricately explore the realm of lab-grown diamond cuts and shapes, furnishing you with in-depth knowledge and invaluable perspectives to empower you in making a well-informed choice.
Exploring the intricate world of diamond cuts and shapes is essential for those seeking the perfect engagement ring. Understanding the nuances of engagement ring shapes and cuts is crucial in appreciating the exquisite beauty and brilliance of these precious stones. The cut of a diamond plays a pivotal role in how its facets interact with light, influencing the sparkle that captures hearts during proposals.
Diamond cuts refer to the arrangement and proportions of a diamond's facets, which are the flat, polished surfaces that make up its exterior. The quality of a diamond's cut is often graded based on its ability to reflect light and create a visually stunning display. The cut is typically assessed in terms of three primary attributes: brilliance (the total light reflected), fire (the dispersion of light into colours), and scintillation (the flashes of light as the diamond moves).
Diamond shapes, on the other hand, pertain to the overall silhouette of the gemstone. The choice of shape is a matter of personal preference and style, with each shape possessing its unique characteristics. Common diamond shapes include round, princess, emerald, asscher, cushion, radiant, pear, marquise, and oval. Each shape carries its own set of virtues, influencing factors such as perceived size, elongation, and symmetry.
The history and evolution of diamond cuts and shapes trace back centuries, reflecting advancements in gem-cutting techniques and changing trends. Early diamond cutting was basic, with diamonds often fashioned into simple shapes to preserve carat weight rather than maximise brilliance.
Over time, innovative artisans developed more intricate cutting styles, refining the art and science of shaping diamonds. Today, modern technology, such as computer-aided design and laser cutting, allows for unparalleled precision in crafting diamonds with exceptional brilliance.
When choosing a diamond cut and shape, several factors should be considered. The wearer's personal style, preferences, and the intended setting for the diamond all play a role. Additionally, certain shapes may complement different hand shapes and sizes. The four Cs – cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight – also impact a diamond's overall quality, with the diamond cut being particularly influential on its visual appeal.
A well-informed selection ensures that the diamond not only fits the wearer's taste but also showcases the gem's inherent beauty to its fullest extent. In the following sections, we will delve into the specifics of each diamond cut and shape, exploring their unique characteristics and highlighting key considerations for those seeking the perfect diamond.
Exploration of common engagement ring shapes opens a door to the captivating world of timeless beauty and intricate craftsmanship. Understanding the nuances of popular shapes and cuts of diamonds enhances your appreciation for these precious gems and guides you in finding the perfect engagement ring that resonates with your style and preferences.
Let's begin with the Round Cut—an evergreen classic renowned for its timeless appeal. Ideal proportions ensure maximum sparkle, making it a versatile choice suitable for various settings, contributing to its popularity in diamond engagement ring styles. Statistics reveal the Round Cut as the most sought-after choice, making it a top contender for those in search of the perfect engagement ring.
A nice Princess Cut diamond can really take center stage in your ring, with its square shape and sharp corners. Introduced in the 1960s, this cut has gained immense popularity, and its sharp, clean lines make it a favorite for custom engagement ring designs. Exploring different setting choices enhances the distinct allure of the Princess Cut, providing a personalised touch to your engagement ring.
The Emerald Cut, with its rectangular shape and cut corners, originated in the 1920s during the Art Deco period. This cut reflects historical design trends, making it a captivating choice for those seeking a touch of vintage sophistication in their engagement ring. Its unique faceting details add to its allure, creating a mesmerising play of light that stands out in diamond engagement ring styles.
For those desiring a soft, rounded corner appeal in their diamond cut, the Cushion Cut should be the star of your show. This cut's ability to evoke a vintage charm has made it a popular choice for proposals, and finding the perfect engagement ring with a Cushion Cut involves considering suitable settings that enhance its romantic allure.
The elongated shape of the Oval Cut presents a flattering appearance. Gaining prominence in recent years, the Oval Cut has become a sought-after choice for those seeking a unique yet classic look in their engagement ring. Tips for choosing the perfect oval cut ring include considerations for finger shape and personal style, emphasizing the importance of a customised and flattering fit.
Classic engagement ring shapes and diamond cuts extend beyond mere aesthetics. These qualities invite you to be part of a narrative that spans generations, celebrating timeless beauty and craftsmanship. Whether captivated by the enduring charm of the Round Cut, drawn to the modern allure of the Princess Cut, or enchanted by the vintage appeal of the Emerald, Cushion, or Oval Cuts, your choice becomes a statement in finding the perfect engagement ring that reflects your unique style and love story.
And now, a modern twist to your story of finding a forever ring - classic cuts aren’t all there are on offer. Embarking on the exploration of specialised diamond cuts and shapes unveils a realm where each design can present a novel blending of history, artistry, and a touch of mystique.
Let's explore the fascinating world of three specialised cuts—the Marquise Cut, Asscher Cut, and Radiant Cut—each possessing distinct characteristics that elevate them to extraordinary heights in diamond brilliance.
First in our journey is the Marquise Cut, a captivating diamond shape that resembles a boat. Beyond its unique silhouette, the Marquise Cut is renowned for creating the illusion of a larger size, making it a favourite choice for those desiring an impactful appearance.
Fun fact: the Marquise Cut originated in the 18th century when King Louis XV of France commissioned a diamond to be cut into the shape of the lips of his mistress, Marquise de Pompadour. When considering a Marquise Cut, careful considerations for the right setting become essential to enhance its inherent beauty and maximise its visual impact.
Next, we encounter the Asscher Cut, a square-shaped diamond with step-cut facets that exude vintage elegance. This unique cut has its roots firmly embedded in the Art Deco era, dating back to the early 20th century. Named after its creator, Joseph Asscher, this cut became highly popular during the Jazz Age, capturing the glamorous essence of the time. Notably, the Asscher Cut saw a resurgence in popularity in recent years, becoming a distinct and timeless choice for those seeking a blend of historical charm and contemporary sophistication.
Our journey then takes us to the Radiant Cut, a square or rectangular diamond with cut corners that seamlessly balances contemporary appeal, brilliance, and durability. This versatile cut combines the elegance of an emerald shape with the sparkle of a round brilliant cut, offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity.
Radiant Cuts are known for their versatility, making them suitable for various settings and styles. As we explore the world of Radiant Cuts, statistics reveal their increasing popularity, solidifying their position as a preferred choice for those seeking a balance between classic charm and modern allure.
In conclusion, the journey through the diverse world of diamond cuts and shapes is a fascinating exploration that goes beyond the superficial aspects of jewellery. Selecting the perfect engagement ring involves careful consideration of the intricate details that contribute to the overall allure and beauty of a diamond.
Whether one is drawn to the timeless elegance of the Round Cut, the clean lines of the Princess Cut, the vintage sophistication of the Emerald and Cushion Cuts, or the contemporary allure of the Oval and Radiant Cuts, each choice reflects a unique style and personal love story. The specialised cuts, such as the Marquise, Asscher, and Radiant, add a modern twist to the narrative, offering a blend of history, artistry, and mystique.
As you embark on the journey to find the perfect engagement ring, keep in mind that each cut and shape carries its own narrative—a story of craftsmanship, tradition, and personal expression.

Selecting the metal for your engagement ring is a significant decision that extends beyond mere aesthetics. This guide explores the diverse world of engagement ring metals, offering a detailed exploration of each option. From classic choices to contemporary alternatives, we'll dissect the characteristics of each metal, providing valuable insights to empower you in making an informed decision. Additionally, we'll share tips on selecting the right metal for your wedding band and guide you on proper care to ensure your engagement ring maintains its brilliance over time.
Gold, with its enduring elegance, is a sought-after metal for engagement rings, symbolising tradition and lasting beauty. Yellow, white, and rose gold each carry distinct personalities, providing a spectrum of possibilities to express your unique style.
Yellow gold has stood the test of time as a classic and durable metal option for engagement ring bands, captivating couples with its warm and traditional allure. The historical significance of yellow gold in engagement rings traces back through centuries, embodying a rich legacy of symbolism associated with wealth, purity, and everlasting love.
Throughout history, yellow gold has been a symbol of prosperity and luxury, often favoured by royalty and nobility. Its golden hue is reminiscent of the sun, representing illumination, positivity, and a timeless connection between two individuals. In ancient civilisations, such as Egypt and Rome, yellow gold was highly prized and associated with gods and immortality.
White gold, celebrated for its modern and sleek appearance, stands out as a popular choice among engagement ring metals. Crafted by alloying yellow gold with white metals such as nickel or palladium, white gold achieves its distinctive hue, making it a versatile option for engagement ring bands.
This section explores the characteristics of white gold, including the impact of rhodium plating and its adaptable design—making it a coveted choice among ring metals. Fun Fact: The popularity of white gold soared in the early 20th century, aligning with Art Deco aesthetics and driving its prominence in engagement ring bands.
In addition, recent trends indicate that white gold remains a top choice for engagement ring bands, with approximately 30% of couples opting for its modern elegance.
In recent years, rose gold has become a captivating choice for engagement ring bands, infusing them with a romantic and contemporary touch. Uncovering the alloy composition that gives rose gold its rosy tint reveals a delicate balance of copper and gold, contributing to its versatility among ring metal types.
Rose gold's popularity stems from its ability to complement various skin tones, making it an increasingly sought-after option for engagement ring bands. The resurgence of rose gold in the 21st century is often attributed to its popularity in vintage and antique jewellery, captivating modern couples with its nostalgic charm.
Recent market insights indicate a steady increase in the preference for rose gold among engagement ring bands, with approximately 20% of buyers choosing this romantic and distinctive option.
In the contemporary landscape, platinum and palladium engagement rings shine as symbols of sophistication. Their history, fun facts, and statistics offer a comprehensive view for those seeking a refined and distinctive choice.
Platinum, renowned for its rarity and durability, has long been a coveted choice for engagement rings. With its natural whiteness and substantial weight, it exudes a luxurious aesthetic that has captivated discerning couples throughout history.
From ancient Egypt, where it adorned royal treasures, to the Art Deco era in the early 20th century, platinum's intricate designs defined sophisticated and glamorous jewellery. Its scarcity in ancient times earned it the moniker "the metal of kings," a title that still resonates today.
Approximately 10-15% of engagement ring buyers choose platinum for its enduring durability, resistance to tarnish, and timeless appeal. Beyond aesthetics, platinum symbolises enduring commitment, making it a lasting choice for couples seeking a symbol of love that spans centuries.
As a lighter alternative to platinum, palladium offers engagement ring seekers a compelling blend of affordability and resilience. A member of the platinum family, palladium shares its durability while providing a budget-friendly option. Discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston, palladium didn't gain prominence in jewellery until recent decades. Its rise in popularity is attributed to its hypoallergenic properties, making it suitable for individuals with metal sensitivities.
Palladium is part of the platinum group of metals, alongside platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium. Recent market trends reveal a growing interest in palladium, with approximately 5-10% of engagement ring buyers choosing this versatile, cost-effective alternative.
Regular cleaning is essential for maintaining the radiance of your engagement ring, particularly its metal band. Establishing a simple cleaning ritual at home ensures a lasting sparkle.
Create a gentle solution with mild detergent and warm water, soak your ring, and delicately scrub away residues with a soft brush. For intricate designs, professional cleaning from a jeweller is recommended. Delicate gemstones like pearls or emeralds may need specialised care.
According to industry experts, engagement rings, including their bands, should ideally undergo professional cleaning every six months to maintain their brilliance. Couples who adhere to this routine report longer-lasting shine and durability, benefiting both engagement ring bands and metal types.
Regular examinations by a skilled jeweller are not just a precautionary measure but a crucial step in safeguarding the perfection of your engagement ring, particularly its metals. Identifying potential issues early can prevent further damage and ensure the longevity of your cherished piece.
Jewellers possess the expertise to spot loose stones, weakened prongs, or signs of wear that might go unnoticed by the untrained eye. Utilising specialized tools such as magnifiers or microscopes, professional jewellers conduct thorough inspections of both engagement ring metals and bands, leaving no detail unnoticed.
Surprisingly, up to 80% of engagement rings may harbor undetected issues that, if unaddressed, could lead to more significant problems. Regular professional inspections significantly decrease the risk of such issues, benefiting both ring metals and metal types.
In the pursuit of finding the perfect metal for your engagement ring, it's essential to embrace the nuances that resonate with your unique love story. At Lark & Berry, we understand the significance of this choice, offering a curated selection of lab-grown diamond engagement rings in all the metal options discussed.

Since Lark & Berry's launch in 2018, we have been a near-permanent fixture in the press and on red carpets at events around the world, including the Oscars, Met Galas, BAFTA events and more.
However, after revolutionizing the diamond industry by being the world's first fine designer brand to use only cultured diamonds and stones, we realised that we wanted to extend our reach beyond jewellery. As a result, we created Lark & Berry Match, a meticulously curated selection of unique and innovative fashion brands from around the world, each with its distinct style and approach to design and production.
We have curated a selection of the world's most disruptive high-end luxury fashion brands, each carefully selected for their unique story and commitment to better and innovative production practices and their dedication to giving back to communities and helping people.
Lark & Berry Match's curation includes high-end fashion items such as handbags, loungewear, casual and formal wear, shoes, and sunglasses. The portal also offers a range of lab-grown gemstone jewellery brands, including Alondra, Simple Diamond, Starry Nights, Colour and Gem, and Noah C.W., catering to a vast array of tastes and styles.
"This is a new shopping portal made solely of MUST-HAVE items. We've sorted through hundreds of brands and continue to do so," explained Lark & Berry founder Laura Chavez.
"We only invite those who exhibit exceptional quality in the luxury goods they produce. Coupled with that, we only want those brands that are creating in unique ways. These are brands that have great stories to tell and whose inspirations will compel customers to wear their items proudly. This type of natural, 100% genuine passion to create shows in the products one produces, and whether the customer even consciously realizes it or not, it's all making for a piece of clothing or accessory they will absolutely love."
Those unique ways in which our Match partner brands are creating their disruptive designs? Well, that's our favourite part.
Over the next two or three months, we are going to share many of these brands' founder stories with you by letting them speak for themselves, both here on our Lark & Berry blog through print interviews we have been conducting with them, and on our Lark & Berry affiliated Diamond Disruptor Podcast, set to relaunch soon, featuring interviews we did in podcast form.
For now, here's just a sampling of some fascinating qualities of how our Match brands are uniquely creating their disrupting designs:
1800 Gallons - 1800 Gallons' commitment to sustainability begins with their name - a reference to the amount of water it takes to make just one new pair of typical, fast-fashion jeans. Made in London, this studio uses only industry deadstock or upcycled denim pieces.
Bastet Noir - This Macedonian-made brand specialises in stylish women's clothing for all seasons, tastefully riding the line between formal and casual. Bastet Noir's selections are made from natural deadstock fabrics, hand-picked by the team, which is comprised of only single mothers being paid a fair wage in an often conflicted fashion industry.
BEEN - BEEN founder Genia Mineeva seeks to rescue materials destined for landfill and turn them into timeless, classically designed handbags. This is a practice that goes beyond zero waste... it's eliminating environmental harm to make something functional, stylish and beautiful!
Benedetti Life - Choosing Benedetti Life is a choice for conscious, unique luxury fashion that stylishly stands out - all while making a positive statement. The brand is reimagining luxury fashion by using only local, non-toxic, vegan textiles to create its Haute looks.
Campo Collection - Ever mindful of a "slow fashion" sustainable design practice, this Miami, Florida-based luxury loungewear label's fabric is ethically sourced, and all garments are consciously produced locally and in support of women artisans employed from surrounding communities.
Emily Westenberger - Los Angeles-based designer Emily Westenberger makes every item by hand - the very definition of "slow fashion." This process is inherently waste preventative, as zero excess clothing items are created in the hope someone will purchase them. Westenberger strives to be transparent throughout her hand-tailored process of creation, educating others along the way and setting standards for a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry.
LOLADARLING - founder Emanuela Giovanardi discovers gems - amazing vintage clothes she reconstructs entirely by hand, combining antiquated artisanal methods and innovative industrial technologies. Taking something old and turning it into something new is the very essence of sustainability in fashion, making LOLADARLING a perfect match for Lark & Berry's Match concept.
OutOfSyncWales - Jackie and her two daughters Kate and Megan use sustainable and rescued fabrics, with limited runs on garments to create luxury fashion that is original and on-trend for wherever you may wear it.
Pala Eyewear - For every pair of sunglasses sold, Pala gives back to eye-care programmes across Africa. This is achieved through Pala providing grants directly to vision centres, dispensaries and screening and training programmes through a partner charity. To date, more than 11,000 sight-impaired Africans-in-need have had their lives positively changed thanks to receiving a pair of prescription glasses or corrective surgery. To top it all off, Pala chooses materials that are better for the environment, which means staying on top of innovation in the materials they use across every part of their product.
Sambar - Sambar doesn't believe in wearing animals; consequently, all their fabrics are 100% vegan. Sambar also uses organic cotton and all sorts of recycled materials to create their many fashionable accessories. The brand also only creates new items when its existing collections have sold out - part of an environmentally conscious "slow fashion" ethos.
ZEROBARRACENTO - Two key aspects of how ZEROBARRACENTO are doing things differently are represented in their name – for the brand, “ZERO” means zero waste, reduction of pollution and emissions and zero discrimination of gender identity. “CENTO%” (one hundred percent) refers to the exceptional quality of the brand’s clothing, which is made in Italy, with sustainable fabrics and full production transparency.

Jewellers leverage cutting-edge technology by specializing in lab-grown diamonds to create stunning pieces while preserving our planet's resources. Consequently, these gems are gaining popularity among discerning jewellery buyers seeking high-end alternatives with a guilt-free conscience.
Rarity, Price, and Quality
Mined diamonds are portrayed as rare in news blasts and advertising from mined diamond companies, but as the well-researched and acclaimed recent Netflix documentary “Nothing Lasts Forever” pointed out, the world is in over-supply of them. The mined diamonds industry as been oft-accused of artificially inflating the price of mined diamonds jewellery based on the false premise that said diamonds are rare.
Because lab-grown diamonds require no mining, the resulting jewellery is priced more fairly - and without any quality compromised, as lab-grown diamonds are the very same as mined diamonds.
Unveiling the Technology
Jewellers specializing in lab-grown diamonds rely on state-of-the-art technology, a feat that would otherwise take millennia to achieve. Techniques such as chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and high pressure/high temperature (HPHT) solutions are employed. These methods involve advanced equipment that manipulates molecular structures to produce diamonds. While this may sound like magic, it has been a reality since the 1950s, spearheaded by American electric giant GE (General Electric). Ongoing research aims to improve the energy efficiency of diamond growth in laboratories, potentially leading to even more sustainable production techniques.
Environmental Advantages
The environmental benefits of lab-grown diamonds are significant. Since these diamonds are created in a controlled laboratory setting, traditional mining practices and associated emissions are eliminated. No vast mining infrastructures or energy-intensive equipment are required. Additionally, lab-grown diamonds can be produced locally, reducing the distance between manufacturers and customers and contributing to a greener industry. The efficiency of lab-grown diamond production also helps control the cost per carat, ensuring both producers and buyers get excellent value. Given the current climate crisis, the eco-friendly credentials of lab-grown diamonds hold even greater importance.
Inclusions in Lab-Grown Diamonds
Contrary to a common misconception, lab-grown diamonds are not always structurally perfect and can have inclusions, similar to those found in mined diamonds. The manufacturing process replicates the natural conditions in which diamonds form underground, leading to the formation of inclusions within lab-grown gems. However, lab-grown diamonds are routinely purer than mined diamonds in the jewellery market, with only 2% of mined diamonds reaching the coveted Type IIa purity status, while virtually all lab-grown diamonds are rated that highly.
Regulations and Consumer Protection
Different countries have regulations governing the sale and marketing of lab-grown diamonds. For instance, in the UK, the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) has established guidelines to ensure accurate labelling and identification of diamonds, be they mined or lab-grown. These regulations have been met with controversy since lab-grown diamonds are exactly the same as mined diamonds. And in the US, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) ruled in the last few years that the “synthetic” descriptor wasn’t a requirement any longer in lab-grown advertising, as there’s a connotation of “fake” with that word, and lab-grown diamonds are of course every bit as real as mined diamonds.
There’s also a misconception, often perpetuated by mined diamonds loyalists, that lab-grown diamonds proponents are trying to hide that their diamonds are lab-grown, when in fact, there are a growing number of brands (Lark & Berry is a very early and influential example) who are proud of only using lab-grown, and make it a highlight of advertising. After all, the market share for lab-grown keeps growing every year, as more consumers wish to lead more sustainable lives.
More young couples are buying lab-grown engagement rings - why not be part of a growing, positive trend?
Recent studies have shown a significant increase in the popularity of lab-grown diamonds among young couples. According to a 2018 survey by MVI Marketing LLC, 70% of millennial-aged consumers would consider buying a lab-grown alternative to reduce the carbon footprint, deforestation and wildlife habitat loss associated with traditional diamond mining, as well as ease concerns about child labour and other human rights abuses in the global mining industry. That 70% figure now, in 2023, is only thought to be increasing.
Possibly the most important fact, saved for last: Buying lab-grown is the only way you can know 100% your diamond is conflict-free, as issues, though less than in the past, continue to proliferate in the mined diamond trade.
A glance at Netflix's current documentary offering "Nothing Lasts Forever," which highlights ongoing issues with diamond cartels, says it all - you could still wind up with a less than savoury diamond regarding the ethics in its sourcing when you buy mined. One of the primary advantages of lab-grown diamonds is their guarantee of being conflict-free. Mined diamonds have long been associated with the issue of "blood diamonds," which are diamonds that are sourced from regions plagued by violence and human rights abuses. These diamonds often finance armed conflicts, civil wars, and other illegal activities.
In contrast, lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled laboratory setting, ensuring complete traceability and transparency in their production. These diamonds are made using sustainable and environmentally responsible methods, which greatly reduces the ecological impact compared to traditional mining. Since they are grown under controlled conditions, there is no risk of human rights abuses or unethical practices associated with their production.
The popularity of lab-grown diamonds is poised to continue its ascent due to their numerous advantages. Jewellers must recognize the potential of lab-grown diamonds to meet the increasing consumer demand. By embracing this trend, they can create exquisite jewellery pieces while contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious industry. Lab-grown diamonds have become a symbol of responsible luxury, offering a compelling alternative that combines elegance, quality, and ethical sourcing.

Lab-grown sapphires and emeralds are created using advanced technology in a controlled environment. These gems are made using the same basic materials as underground gems, but they are grown under conditions that simulate the natural processes that occur deep within the earth.
To create lab-grown sapphires, a small piece of sapphire rock is placed in a chamber with a solution of chemicals and heat. Over time, the chemicals form a crystal structure around the original piece of sapphire, resulting in a larger, identical gemstone.
Creating lab-grown emeralds follows a slightly different process. Instead of using a piece of emerald rock, a small amount of raw materials, such as beryl, chromium, and vanadium, are placed in a chamber with a solution of chemicals and heat.
Over time, the chemicals form into a crystal structure around the raw materials, producing a larger, identical emerald.
The result of these processes is a lab-grown sapphire or emerald without the need for any mining. The stones have less inclusions, and therefore, usually exhibit greater sparkle as they are much clearer.
One of the significant advantages of lab-grown sapphires and emeralds is that they are fairly priced relative to the inflated pricing of mined stones.
Mined sapphires and emeralds can be extremely expensive, making them unaffordable for many consumers. Lab-grown gems, on the other hand, can be produced in large quantities and sold at a fraction of the cost of natural gems.
In addition to being reasonably priced, lab-grown gems are also more sustainable. Mining for gems can have a devastating impact on the environment, and the working conditions for miners can be hazardous. The jewellery industry has undergone a significant shift in recent years, with more and more customers opting for lab-grown diamonds and other gemstones. In this blog, we will explore the reasons behind this trend and provide some statistics to support the growing popularity of lab-grown jewellery.
What is lab-grown jewellery?
Lab-grown jewellery, also known as cultured jewellery, refers to gems and diamonds that are created in a laboratory environment instead of being mined from the earth. These gems are created using advanced technologies that simulate the natural processes that occur over millions of years deep within the earth's crust.
Why are more customers choosing lab-grown jewellery?
Several reasons explain the growing popularity of lab-grown jewellery. Here are some of the most significant factors!
Ethical and Environmental Concerns
The mining of diamonds and other gems has long been associated with human rights violations, environmental destruction, and even armed conflict. In contrast, lab-grown diamonds and gems are created in a controlled environment with significantly fewer environmental impacts and zero ethical concerns. As more and more consumers become aware of the negative impacts of mining, they are opting for lab-grown options as a more sustainable and ethical choice.
Lower Cost
Lab-grown diamonds and other gems are typically priced more fairly than their mined counterparts. This is because the production process is more efficient and less expensive than mining, which involves costly equipment and labour-intensive processes. As a result, lab-grown jewellery offers consumers a realistically priced option for high-quality, beautiful gems, without having to compromise a single bit on quality or authenticity!
Consistency and Quality
Because lab-grown gems are created in a controlled environment, their quality and consistency are often higher than that of mined gems. Lab-grown diamonds are particularly prized for their uniformity, as they are less likely to have the inclusions and other imperfections that are common in mined diamonds. As a result, lab-grown jewellery offers consumers a more reliable and consistent option for high-quality, beautiful gems.
Statistics on the Growth of Lab-Grown Jewellery
Now that we have explored some of the reasons behind the growing popularity of lab-grown jewellery, let us take a closer look at some of the statistics that support this trend...
Market Size
According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, the global lab-grown diamond market size was valued at £16.2 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach £27.6 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 9.4% during the forecast period.
Sales Growth
The sales of lab-grown diamonds have grown significantly in recent years. According to a report by Bain & Company, the sales of lab-grown diamonds grew by 15% to 20% in 2019, while the sales of mined diamonds fell by 1% to 2%.
Consumer Preferences
According to a survey by the Natural Diamond Council, 70% of millennials said they would consider a lab-grown diamond for an engagement ring, and 41% of those surveyed said they would prefer a lab-grown diamond over a mined diamond. Additionally, a report by De Beers (perhaps the biggest name in mined diamonds jewellery!) found that 66% of consumers would consider buying a lab-grown diamond.
Where does that leave us today… and where are we headed?
The emergence of lab-grown stones such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, black onyx and more has transformed the jewellery industry, providing consumers with an alternative to mined stones. These lab-grown gemstones are not only sustainable and eco-friendly, but they are also considerably less expensive than their mined counterparts. With technological advancements and production costs decreasing, it is probable that lab-grown stones will become even more accessible and favoured in the future – and for the hope of the planet, possibly even totally supplant mined gemstones in jewellery!

So, in recent years, lab-grown diamonds and other stones have become increasingly popular for piercing. This trend has been fueled by several factors, including the increasing demand for ethically-sourced and sustainable jewellery, as well as the growing acceptance - and even preference - of lab-grown diamonds as a viable alternative to mined diamonds.
But it’s not just fine rings, bracelets and necklaces where lab-grown diamonds are making an impact – lab-grown diamonds and other lab-grown sapphires, emeralds and rubies are becoming increasingly trendy and luxurious to pierce with, thanks in part to growing concerns about the environmental and ethical impact of mined diamonds, along with the realization and growing acceptance that lab-grown luxury jewellery is the very same as any mined diamonds piercing pierce.
But enough about business and science for now… what piercing should you get? What part of your ear? Is this your first piercing… and are you nervous? Or are you a seasoned piercing vet, and looking to add more pieces to layer your look?
You have questions, we have answers! Our lead piercer and stylist Svetlana contributed to this article to help us gather general info, style tips, pain ratings per piercing type and all other sorts of fun info so you know exactly what to expect going into your first, or next, luxury piercing!
All about the most trendy luxury ear piercings, starting with the most common ear location - Lobe Piercings!
Lobe piercings have been practised by cultures all over the world for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians are believed to have been the first to pierce their ears, viewing this accessorising as a symbol of wealth and social status.
"Lobe piercings - the soft, bottom part of the ear - are without a doubt the most popular ear piercings," says Svet, our lead piercer. "It’s very easy to heal a lobe piercing, and for that reason, in some cultures, the lobe piercing could be done even to young children or even babies."
For adults looking to change their style game and add some luxury piercing(s) to their lives? The sky is the limit on piercing jewellery options. Hoops and bars can both look great, as well as everything from lab-grown diamond pieces to those with sapphires and emeralds.

“Even though the lobe piercing will heal a lot quicker than any higher piercing on the ear, it is always advised to follow the standard steps of the healing process and clean twice a day with the aftercare lotion provided by a professional piercer. The lobe piercing fully heals for most people in 6 to 8 weeks.” - Svet
Upper Lobe Piercings
Upper ear lobe piercings are also known as "high lobe" or "cartilage" piercings, as they go through the cartilage of the ear rather than the fleshy lower lobe. In some cultures, such as those in South Asia and the Middle East, upper ear piercings are traditional and often done as part of cultural or religious practices.

Helix Piercings
The upper helix piercing is a type of cartilage piercing that goes through the upper ridge of the ear, just above the lobe.
For over a year now and counting, it’s been a trending look to curate your ear by stacking piercings. Celebs ranging from Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards to Lilly Allen and Beyonce herself have been photographed sporting helix piercings.
“It’s probably the second most popular choice after lobe piercings,” says Svet. “I think it’s the easiest way to add a bit of edge and contemporary look to your everyday style.”

"Be cautious not to change the earring or downsize the bar prematurely, as the cartilage inside may appear healed but can still be damaged. Patience is essential to avoid infections from improper cleaning routines or excessive touching and movement of the earring. It's important to never leave your helix piercing without an earring, even for short periods, as the healing process will begin immediately and the hole may close up overnight." - Svet
The Flat Piercing
A flat ear piercing, also known as a "flat helix" piercing, is a type of surface piercing that is done on the flat surface of the ear cartilage.
“Ears are not twins, they’re sisters! Sometimes on one ear, someone may not have a sufficient area for a flat piercing, and if that’s the case I can advise the client on what to do instead.” - Svet

The Conch Piercing
A conch ear piercing is a type of cartilage piercing that is done on the inner shell of the ear, in the area known as the concha. The name "conch" comes from the Latin word for "shell", referring to the curved shape of the inner ear where the piercing is located. Conch piercings can be done in two different areas: the inner conch, which is located near the centre of the ear, or the outer conch, which is closer to the edge of the ear.
"Adding a charm to your helix, conch or upper lobe hoop will achieve a super modern take on the hoop ear stack. Those who love to stand out from the crowd will love this trend." - Svet

Tragus Piercing
A tragus piercing is a type of cartilage piercing that is done on the small, round piece of cartilage that sits in front of the ear canal. Tragus piercings have been around for centuries and were first documented in ancient cultures, including the Mayans and the Aztecs.
“The tragus piercing is considered one of the smaller ear piercings,” says Svet. “It’s recommended to choose a smaller and daintier earring rather than a larger statement piece – at least when receiving the piercing. You can swap to something larger if desired once the piercing area has healed.”

PAIN RATING & AFTERCARE:
4 out of 10 on the piercing pain scale. Follow piercer's guidelines for aftercare!
“Despite the myth that tragus piercings are painful, they are only associated with a pressure sensation rather than pain, due to the lack of nerve endings. After the piercing, slight swelling and soreness may occur, but this will subside after a few days. It is essential to keep the earring in place during the entire healing period, as cartilage tends to close quickly and the piercing may be lost.” - Svet

You’re a Lark & Berry fan – you know we made our name using only lab-grown diamonds and stones, and that’s simple enough, right? Just buy lab-grown instead of mined stones, and it’s as easy as that to do something exponentially better for the planet!
But with sustainability in fashion, it can be a much more complex world. There are all kinds of sustainable materials out there, old and new, and things to watch out for like “fast fashion” and “green-washing.”
We know you want to be a conscientious consumer… so you’ve come to the right place to learn!
As a fashion enthusiast, you're probably always on the lookout for the next cool trend in luxury clothing. But have you considered the impact of your fashion choices on the environment? As we become more conscious of the negative impact of the fashion industry on the planet, it's essential to support brands that prioritize sustainability in their design and manufacturing methods.
Sustainability in fashion is a growing movement that aims to reduce the environmental and social impact of clothing production. Fast fashion, in particular, has come under criticism for its wastefulness and contribution to pollution. But sustainable fashion encompasses so much more than just choosing between lab-grown or mined diamonds.
With so many moving parts involved in sustainability, it can be challenging to keep up with everything happening. However, our new platform Lark & Berry's Match is proud to work with brands that prioritize sustainable practices. That means no matter what you might buy on the platform, you're getting sustainable clothing.
One of the most significant factors driving the trend towards sustainable fashion is the growing awareness of the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
The production and distribution of clothing use non-renewable resources like oil and water, and the pollution caused by textile dyeing and finishing processes further contributes to environmental degradation.
Consumers are starting to realize that their choices have consequences, and they are looking for ways to reduce their impact on the planet. As a result, there has been a surge in demand for clothing made using ethical labour practices and sustainably sourced materials.
This is as good a place as any to tackle green-washing.
As more people become aware of the impact of our actions on the environment, it's no surprise that companies are trying to capitalize on this trend by marketing themselves as "green" or "sustainable." However, not all claims of sustainability are created equal, and fashion consumers need to be wary of the phenomenon known as "green-washing."
Green-washing can take many forms, including vague or misleading language, green packaging or labels without actual changes to production processes, or false claims of eco-friendliness. It can be challenging for consumers to navigate these claims, but there are steps we can take to shop more sustainably.
First and foremost, it's essential to do your research. Look for brands that are transparent about their production processes and materials used, and that have certifications or third-party verification for their sustainability claims. Don't just take their word for it; look for concrete evidence to back up their claims.
Second, be wary of vague or misleading language. Terms like "eco-friendly" or "green" can be used in a variety of ways, and may not indicate sustainability. Instead, look for specific claims such as the use of organic or recycled materials or a reduction in water or energy usage during production.
Third, consider the overall impact of a product. Even if a product is made from sustainable materials, it may still have a high carbon footprint due to transportation or production processes. Look for locally-produced products or those that have a clear plan for reducing their carbon footprint.
Finally, it's worth remembering that the most sustainable option is often to simply buy less.
Rather than constantly purchasing new clothes, consider investing in high-quality pieces that will last for years, or shop secondhand to give existing clothes a new life.
Being an informed and responsible fashion consumer requires some effort, but it's a crucial step in reducing our impact on the environment. By being cautious of greenwashing and supporting genuinely sustainable brands, we can help create a more sustainable future for ourselves and the planet.
To help you make informed choices about what you buy, we've put together a list of sustainable materials and methods that brands represented by Lark & Berry's Match are using to create their fashion.
Deadstock fabric, for instance, refers to excess fabric that has not been used by a fashion brand or manufacturer and is often sold off to third-party vendors. Using deadstock fabric in fashion helps reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry by repurposing existing fabric instead of producing new textiles.
Organic cotton is another sustainable option that is grown without the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides, making it environmentally friendly. Hemp, Tencel, and bamboo are other sustainable materials used to create clothing that is soft, lightweight, and durable.
Wool is a natural and sustainable fibre that is often used in clothing like sweaters and coats, while linen is one of the oldest and most sustainable fabrics that require less water and energy to produce than other fibres.
In addition to the changes being made by individual brands, brand collectives are doing great work to promote sustainability and great design as widely as possible. Lark & Berry's Match is proud to bring together sustainability-minded brands with excellent and unique designs from all over the world, making it easy to shop with sustainability in mind.
And on the lab-grown diamonds front? Efforts to use renewable energy to make lab-grown diamonds are growing. The rapid progress in labs using renewable energy sources in the diamond-growing process is motivated by a rising demand for environmentally conscious products and the aim to decrease the carbon footprint associated with diamond production.
The fact there's a growing number of labs utilising renewable energy to cultivate diamonds aligns with a broader global trend. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the proportion of renewable energy in the global power sector has been steadily increasing. In 2020, renewable energy accounted for approximately 26% of global electricity production, with solar and wind energy being the primary contributors. As renewable energy becomes more accessible and cost-effective, its usage in diamond-growing labs is expected to continue rising.
By embracing renewable energy sources, producers of lab-grown diamonds are reducing their already low emissions (especially when compared to the energy usage and waste generated by diamond mining). This transition not only helps safeguard the environment but also strengthens the overall sustainability and ethical credentials of lab-grown diamonds. As consumer awareness regarding the environmental impact of their purchases grows, selecting diamonds created using renewable energy becomes an attractive choice for those in pursuit of sustainable luxury.
Despite the progress being made towards sustainability in fashion and jewellery, there is still a long way to go. However, as more consumers become aware of the impact of their choices, the trend towards sustainability in fashion and jewellery will continue to grow. So let's get started by supporting sustainable brands and making a positive impact on the planet, one fashion choice at a time!
]]>However, with the advent of technology, a new player has emerged in the diamond market: lab-grown diamonds. These diamonds are created in a laboratory setting using advanced technology and can offer several benefits over mined diamonds, such as being more ethical and sustainable, as well as being priced in such a way that more consumers can have their dream ring. As a result, lab-grown diamonds are beginning to challenge the mined diamond industry and are getting the old guard in the mined diamond world nervous.
With all this in mind, fine jewellery and luxury customers interested in learning more about/ possibly purchasing lab-grown diamonds should be cautious of the many falsehoods circulating out there regarding this new, disrupting diamond.
Let’s take a look at 8 lab-grown diamond myths and get busy debunking them!
Myth #1: Lab-grown diamonds are fake or synthetic diamonds
One of the biggest myths about lab-grown diamonds is that they are fake or synthetic diamonds. This is not true. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined diamonds.
They are grown in a lab using advanced technology that replicates the same conditions that mined diamonds are formed under. The critical difference is that lab-grown diamonds don't have to be mined, which makes them vastly more responsible environmentally.
Myth #2: Lab-grown diamonds are lower quality than mined diamonds
Another common myth about lab-grown diamonds is that they are lower quality than mined diamonds. This is also not true. Lab-grown diamonds are held to the same standards as mined diamonds and are graded using the same criteria: the 4Cs - carat weight, colour, clarity, and cut. Lab-grown can have fewer inclusions and blemishes than mined diamonds because they are grown in a controlled environment.
Myth #3: Lab-grown diamonds are not as valuable as mined diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are often priced lower than mined diamonds, which can lead to the misconception that they are not as valuable. Not true! Lab-grown diamonds will be valuable (in monetary terms) as long as mined diamonds are, due both to lab-grown diamonds rising to challenge mined diamonds for market share, and also, just the simple fact that lab-grown diamonds are the very same diamonds as mined diamonds.
Myth #4: Lab-grown diamonds look different from mined diamonds
Some people believe that lab-grown diamonds look different from mined diamonds, but this is not true. Lab-grown diamonds have the same optical properties as mined diamonds and can be cut and polished to the same standards.
Lab-grown can be even more brilliant and sparkly than mined diamonds because they have fewer inclusions.
Myth #5: Lab-grown diamonds are not environmentally friendly
One of the main advantages of lab-grown diamonds is that they are more environmentally friendly than mined diamonds. Mining diamonds can have a significant impact on the environment, including deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, have a much smaller environmental footprint because they are grown in a controlled environment without the need for mining.
A bonus for lab-grown – there’s a growing number of labs each year not only growing with 100% carbon neutral status but also labs on the rise exploring the potential of carbon-negative diamond-growing.
Myth #6: Lab-grown diamonds are not ethical
Another common misconception about lab-grown diamonds is that they are not ethical. While it is true that there are ethical concerns surrounding the mined diamond industry, lab-grown diamonds are actually heavily praised for their lack of ethical concerns. Because they are grown in a lab, there is no risk of human rights abuses or funding conflict in diamond-producing countries. Additionally, many lab-grown diamond producers are committed to ethical and sustainable practices.
Myth #7: Lab-grown diamonds are not as durable as mined diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are just as durable as mined diamonds because they are made of the same material: carbon. Both mined and lab-grown diamonds can withstand scratches and chips and can only be cut or polished by another diamond. Lab-grown diamonds can even be used in industrial applications because of their hardness and durability.
Myth #8: Lab-grown diamonds are a passing trend
Lab-grown diamonds have been growing in popularity for several years and are here to stay. As more consumers become aware of the environmental and ethical concerns surrounding mined diamonds, the demand for lab-grown diamonds continues to increase.
Additionally, advancements in technology have made it easier and more cost-effective to produce high-quality lab-grown diamonds. As a result, the industry is expected to continue growing in the coming years, with some experts predicting that lab-grown diamonds could account for up to 10% of the diamond market by 2030 – possibly expanding even faster, and who knows, maybe someday replacing mined diamonds altogether as the better option.
To sum things up here - consumers must be aware of the misconceptions surrounding lab-grown diamonds.
The false claims that they are fake or of inferior quality are merely attempts to discredit a rapidly growing industry that is revolutionizing the diamond market. Lab-grown diamonds have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined diamonds, and they are a sustainable and ethical alternative to mined diamonds. Consumers need to educate themselves and make informed decisions about the products they purchase. By choosing lab-grown diamonds, consumers can enjoy the beauty and elegance of a diamond while also contributing to a more sustainable and socially responsible industry. Let's not fall for lies and misinformation, and instead embrace a future where lab-grown diamonds are valued for their unique and positive qualities.

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as created diamonds, grown diamonds or cultured diamonds, are diamonds that are created in a laboratory instead of being mined from the earth. They are made using advanced technological processes that replicate the high-pressure, high-temperature conditions that occur deep beneath the earth's surface where diamonds are formed.
Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as mined diamonds.
The first successful experiment to create diamonds in a laboratory was conducted in the 1950s by General Electric. However, the process was expensive, and the diamonds produced were small and of low quality.
Additionally, they are created in a controlled environment, ensuring that the production process is free from unethical practices.
Another advantage of lab-grown diamonds is their affordability. Mined diamonds feature artificially inflated pricing based on the myth that they are rare and advertising firm-created "emotional value." Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are priced based on the cost of production, which results in the first ever luxury jewellery that is priced fairly. This makes lab-grown diamonds an attractive option for consumers who want a high-quality diamond at a fair price.
Lab-grown diamonds have been met with pushback from the century-plus old mined diamond industry.
One of the main criticisms of lab-grown diamonds from those resistant to change is that they lack the emotional and cultural significance of mined diamonds, which the public is still misled to believe are “rare” (in fact, the world is in over-supply of mined diamonds, which leads to the exorbitant prices of mined diamond luxury jewellery in the market!)
In recent years, the popularity of lab-grown diamonds has been rapidly increasing, and for good reason. Not only are they eco-friendly, but they are also more ethical than their mined counterparts. A persistent issue for environmentally responsible jewellery advocates is convincing the public that these lab-grown diamonds are, indeed, identical to, if not better than, their mined counterparts. The notion that mined diamonds are rare and should cost two months' salary, as the old advertising campaign suggests, is a myth.
All of this mined diamonds thinking is outdated... and simply not true. It's the thinking of the past.
Lab-grown diamonds – a unique value proposition
Lab-grown diamonds have a unique value proposition. They are eco-friendly and conflict-free, which means they are not associated with the human rights violations and environmental damage that are sometimes associated with diamond mining. Customers who are concerned about sustainability and ethics may be more inclined to choose a lab-grown diamond over a mined diamond.
The perception of quality from consumers regarding lab-grown diamonds
Another factor that influences customer acceptance of lab-grown diamonds is the perception of quality. Customers may be misinformed to perceive lab-grown diamonds as inferior to mined diamonds, as they are not formed under the same conditions. However, lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds and possess the same characteristics that make mined diamonds desirable, such as durability, brilliance, and everlasting sparkle.
To combat this perception, some companies have started to market lab-grown diamonds as a premium product. They are highlighting the fact that lab-grown diamonds are created under controlled conditions, which means they are free from the imperfections that can sometimes be found in mined diamonds. This marketing strategy is aimed at convincing customers that lab-grown diamonds are, indeed, a high-quality product that more than rival mined diamonds.
Brand Awareness in the lab-grown diamonds sphere
Brand awareness is another factor that can influence customer acceptance of lab-grown diamonds. Even given lab-grown diamonds rapid growth in the marketplace, some customers may not be aware that lab-grown diamonds exist or may be hesitant to purchase a product that they perceive as being new or untested. To overcome this, companies that specialise in lab-grown diamonds are investing in building their brands and increasing awareness of their product.
One way that designer lab-grown jewellery brands are expanding awareness is by partnering with influencers and celebrities to promote their products
It is crucial to ensure that consumers understand that lab-grown diamonds are certified as genuine and of high quality – the same certifications that mined diamonds receive.
To summarise, the market for lab-grown diamonds is growing quickly as more consumers become aware of the advantages. Lab-grown diamonds provide an ethical and sustainable alternative to mined diamonds, without sacrificing quality or beauty. The growing demand for these diamonds is also driving innovation and competition in the diamond industry, leading to even more choices and advancements in lab-grown diamond technology. As consumers continue to prioritise sustainability and ethical practices in their purchasing decisions, it is likely that the trend towards lab-grown diamonds will continue to gain momentum in the years ahead.

The earliest recorded use of diamonds in jewellery dates back to ancient India, where they were first mined around 800 BC. The Hindus believed that diamonds were created when bolts of lightning struck rocks, and they valued them for their spiritual and mystical properties. Diamond mining was a lucrative business in India, and diamonds were traded along the Silk Road to China, where they were also highly prized.
In Europe, diamonds first appeared in jewellery during the Middle Ages
They were primarily used in royal and religious settings, where they were set into crowns, sceptres, and other ceremonial objects. Because diamonds were rare back then and expensive, they were considered a luxury reserved only for the highest classes of society.
During the Renaissance, diamonds became more widely available due to increased mining in India and the discovery of new diamond deposits in Brazil. As a result, they began to appear more frequently in jewellery worn by wealthy merchants and aristocrats. This era also saw the development of new diamond cutting techniques, which allowed diamonds to be shaped and polished into more intricate and elaborate designs.
The 18th and 19th centuries were a golden age for diamonds in jewellery
The discovery of new diamond deposits in South Africa led to a surge in diamond production, and diamonds became more affordable and accessible to a wider range of consumers. This period also saw the rise of the diamond engagement ring, which became a popular symbol of love and commitment.
One of the most famous diamonds from this era is the Koh-i-Noor, which means "Mountain of Light" in Persian. The diamond is believed to have been mined in India in the 13th century and was owned by several Indian rulers before it was seized by the British East India Company in the 19th century. The diamond was later presented to Queen Victoria and is now part of the British Crown Jewels.
In the early 20th century, diamonds continued to be a popular choice for engagement rings and other types of jewellery
The De Beers mining company, which controlled a significant portion of the world's diamond production, launched an advertising campaign in 1947 that coined the slogan "A diamond is forever." This campaign helped cement the idea that diamonds were an essential part of any romantic relationship and contributed to the enduring popularity of diamond engagement rings.
Today, diamonds continue to be a popular choice for jewellery, and new cutting and polishing techniques have made it possible to create even more intricate and innovative designs… but perhaps the biggest change the industry has ever seen is continuing to occur even as you read this blog entry…
The diamond industry has become more socially conscious, with many companies emphasizing ethical sourcing and sustainable mining practices
In recent years, lab-grown diamonds have also become a popular alternative to mined diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds - also known as created diamonds, grown diamonds, and cultured diamonds - are created in a laboratory using advanced technology and have the same physical and chemical properties as mined diamonds.
In fact, not only are lab-grown diamonds the very same diamonds as mined diamonds, but they’re routinely better, with only 2% of the mined diamonds reaching the superior status of lab-grown.
Luxury jewellery history re-written with the emergence and growing market share of lab-grown diamonds
Diamonds have long been a symbol of luxury, romance, and success. However, the process of mining diamonds has long been controversial, with concerns about human rights abuses, environmental damage, and the exploitation of labour. In recent years, a new technology has emerged that promises to revolutionise the diamond industry: lab-grown diamonds.
Lab-grown diamonds are exactly what they sound like: diamonds that are grown in a laboratory, rather than mined from the earth. The process of growing diamonds in a lab has been around for decades, but until recently, it was prohibitively expensive and produced only small, low-quality diamonds.
In the early 2010s, however, advances in technology began to make lab-grown diamonds more viable
Companies began to invest in the development of new techniques and equipment that could produce larger, higher-quality diamonds at a lower cost.
Today, lab-grown diamonds are produced using two main methods: High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). Both methods use a small diamond "seed" as a starting point and then use either heat and pressure or a gas mixture to grow the diamond layer by layer.
The resulting diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds, and they are graded using the same criteria as mined diamonds. However, lab-grown diamonds are typically priced more fairly than their mined counterparts, which has made them an increasingly popular choice for consumers.
One of the key advantages of lab-grown diamonds is that they are much more environmentally friendly than mined diamonds
The process of mining diamonds is notoriously destructive, with massive amounts of earth and rock displaced to access diamond deposits. The mining process also requires large amounts of water and energy and can cause significant air and water pollution.
In contrast, lab-grown diamonds have a much smaller environmental footprint. While they do require energy to produce, the process is much more efficient and produces far less waste than mining. Lab-grown diamonds also don't carry the same ethical concerns as mined diamonds, which are often associated with human rights abuses and exploitative labour practices.
In addition to their environmental and ethical advantages, lab-grown diamonds are also changing the jewellery industry in other ways. For one, they have disrupted the traditional diamond supply chain. Historically, diamond mining was controlled by a handful of companies that controlled the supply and pricing of diamonds. But with the rise of lab-grown diamonds, new players have entered the market, which has increased competition and driven down prices.
Lab-grown diamonds have also opened up new design possibilities for jewellery designers. Because lab-grown diamonds can be produced in a wider range of colours and shapes than mined diamonds, designers are able to create more unique and intricate pieces. And because lab-grown diamonds are less expensive than mined diamonds, designers have more freedom to experiment with new materials and techniques.
However, despite their many advantages, lab-grown diamonds still face some challenges
For one, there is still a lot of confusion and misinformation around lab-grown diamonds, which can make it difficult for consumers to make informed purchasing decisions. Some consumers still believe that lab-grown diamonds are "fake" or of lower quality than mined diamonds, which is not true.
Another challenge is that lab-grown diamonds are still a relatively new technology, and there is still much research and development that needs to be done. However, whilst this is a challenging area, the good news is the results yielded should only be a net positive for diamonds in luxury jewellery, and best of all, the planet’s well-being.
As the lab-growing of diamonds viable for luxury jewellery is a relatively new science, it’s also still very much a changing one
Methods are constantly being researched and introduced to not only further lower the already low (relative to mining for diamonds) carbon footprint of lab-grown diamonds, but also to make lab-grown diamonds carbon negative.
As it stands today, many labs around the world are already growing diamonds with carbon neutral status, utilising things like renewable solar power to aid in the growth of diamonds. And perhaps most awe-inspiring? There is a lab in the UK that can extract excess carbon from the atmosphere and use it to create diamonds! The science fiction of our childhoods is truly becoming the reality of today.
In conclusion, lab-grown diamonds are a promising new technology that has the potential to revolutionise the diamond industry. They offer a more environmentally friendly and ethical alternative to mined diamonds, whilst also opening up new design possibilities for jewellery designers.

The modern age of diamond mining for mined diamonds luxury jewellery began nearly a hundred years ago
Diamonds, of course, have been mined for perceived value for much longer, and we’ll explore that deeper history below, but the contemporary use of diamonds in luxury jewellery began to resonate with people due to De Beers’ advertising campaigns.
In the 1930s, De Beers launched their campaign based on the idea that true love and commitment could only be shown if a man spent a month's salary on his wife's ring
…and not just any ring, of course, but a diamond ring…with mined diamonds. Of course, back then, mined diamonds were the only option for anyone desiring those gemstones, and for decades, the strife mining was causing in impoverished areas, such as in various African territories, went unnoticed by capitalistic Western countries in the market for expensive rings - buying markets like the US and UK.
Then, in 1947, De Beers changed the face of diamonds luxury jewellery… well, "forever," with their infamous slogan "A diamond is forever."
These two ad campaigns combined solidified the notion in consumers’ heads quite successfully – a diamond ring was the only way to show your love, and a diamond is the most precious gemstone in the world. Consequently, you’d need to pay an arm and a leg to put one on your partner’s finger.
Then, a new way forward began to blossom in the 1950s. But first, some history and science. To understand how a lab-grown diamond is created, it is important to know how diamonds are formed
A diamond formed underground can take a billion years or more to transform from its original state of carbon rock. After diamonds are found underground through exploratory mining, they must be extracted, cut, and polished to obtain the degree of gem-quality status necessary to be set in your jewellery—and only 20% of excavated diamonds are even considered potential candidates.
The earliest diamonds were found in India in the 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago
A majority of these early stones were transported along with the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road. 700 years later, The first example of a diamond's use in jewellery was in the form of a Hungarian queen's crown in 1074 AD. After that, the diamond became used in many crowns and royal jewels. The first documentation of diamond cutting in Europe dates back to 1407, in Paris, where there was an active guild including jewel cutters.
Now, you might recall earlier we mentioned things changed with how diamonds could be sourced by the 1950s. What was that change? Only the most major revolution to happen in fine jewellery possibly ever – not to mention a marvel of modern science!
By the 1940s, the General Electric Research Laboratory in Schenectady, New York, was hard at work on a project that would later disrupt an entire industry.
GE had become the centre of lab grown diamond research. The famed electric company had brought together researchers from chemistry, physics and industrial engineering. Their project was code-named “Project Superpressure” and everyone was sworn to secrecy. It took years of unsuccessful trials, and as time went by, the big brass at GE began to think these efforts might all be for nought.
But then, on the evening of 16 December 1954, that all changed…
Tracy Hall, one of the scientists working on the project to create what was then called "synthetic diamonds," had a breakthrough with this team. The Wikipedia entry for synthetic diamonds really sums it up well:
“[Hall’s] breakthrough was using a "belt" press, which was capable of producing pressures above 10 GPa (1,500,000 psi) and temperatures above 2,000 °C (3,630 °F).[29] The press used a pyrophyllite container in which graphite was dissolved within molten nickel, cobalt or iron. Those metals acted as a "solvent-catalyst", which both dissolved carbon and accelerated its conversion into diamond. The largest diamond he produced was 0.15 mm (0.0059 in) across; it was too small and visually imperfect for jewelry, but usable in industrial abrasives. Hall's co-workers were able to replicate his work, and the discovery was published in the major journal Nature.[30][31] He was the first person to grow a synthetic diamond with a reproducible, verifiable and well-documented process.”
Not to digress too much here, but on a side note, calling lab grown diamonds “synthetic diamonds” is pretty out of fashion at this point, which many believe is for the best. Synthetic, after all, has a connotation of “fake,” and lab grown diamonds are the very same diamonds as mined!
Of course, over the years since Hall’s revelation, the tech and ability to create diamonds has grown exponentially
To create a cultured diamond, these same high heat and pressure conditions that occur naturally underground must be replicated. Most often, one of two methods is utilised to mimic these conditions, either HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition - this is the newer method of the two). In the CVD method, a diamond seed, extracted from the purest diamond in a previous batch, is placed inside a growth chamber. The chamber is then filled with carbon-rich gases, and the seed is exposed to incredible amounts of heat and constant pressure. In the HPHT method, created diamonds are produced from carbon material in apparatuses that mimic the high pressure, high temperature conditions of natural diamond formation in the earth.
Over the course of 50 years, lab technology has evolved to the point where 1 carat of gem-quality cultured diamond can be engineered in a couple of weeks’ time. And we’ll cover this later, but now there are even ways evolving of lab growing diamonds for sustainable luxury jewellery that are totally carbon negative!
With cultured diamonds lab technology, the billion years-plus waiting game and successive diamond mining necessary to get mined diamonds is no longer needed
Regardless of by what method a lab-grown diamond is created, it comes out as an uncut diamond. From that point on, the process by which it gets to your jewellery is exactly the same as that of a mined diamond.
So, once the cultured diamond has been grown, it is laser cut to the desired shape, which nets losses of only 1% of diamond material versus the 8% using ordinary tools. After cutting, it is perfectly polished so that the gloss has the best possible shine.
The result is cultured diamonds (also known as lab-grown, man-made diamonds, grown diamonds, etc) which are chemically, optically, and physically the same as mined diamonds
That’s basically a fancy way of saying we have a scientific miracle on our hands!
Specifically, we’re now able to create diamonds using science that are literally the same rock as a mined diamond. Most importantly, that means mining is no longer necessary. Why bother, when mining hurts the earth, pollutes groundwater, displaces wildlife and opens up the possibility of human conflict in shady diamond trades?
Cultured diamonds are even certified and graded in the same way as mined diamonds
The same prestigious gemology laboratories are utilized to rate cultured diamonds, where scores are assigned in the 4c's of diamond quality (cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight). As cultured diamonds technology has evolved, we are now at the point where most cultured diamonds are rated better than mined diamonds. Most cultured diamonds are rated Type IIa status, whereas only 2% of mined diamonds reach this coveted benchmark.
Besides the convenience of sourcing, the benefits of cultured diamonds are numerous when stacked against the environmental and human costs of diamond mining
Even when considering the price, cultured diamonds win out, as the jewellery created from cultured diamonds is not subject to the price gouging seen in the mined diamond market. Fine cultured diamonds jewellery, which again, is the same quality or better as mined, are routinely 30 to 40% priced fairer than mined diamond jewellery.
Cultured diamonds are more ethical, as their origin is totally transparent
With mined diamonds, there’s no way to be 100% sure that your gemstone is not a conflict or “blood diamond.” This is the case even taking into consideration the controversial and oft-criticized Kimberley Process, which is the mined diamonds industry-standard of verifying conflict status. Cultured diamonds give the buyer more peace of mind, since the exact origin of the diamond is known for certain—namely, that it’s always 100% conflict-free.
Diamond mining takes a strong toll on the environment
The mined-diamond industry has done everything possible to reduce damage to ecosystems, but the eco-cost of exploratory digging, the resultant groundwater pollution, carbon emissions from mining gear, and disturbing wildlife—it’s all still a big concern. Though the diamond mining industry has taken pains to be more environmentally friendly, it’s tough to beat cultured diamonds at this game, as they require no mining at all to produce, as well as no human conflict.
Lastly, let’s end this on a fun note – of the science-fun-fact variety!
No matter what method is employed out there currently to grow diamonds, it’s more sustainable than diamond mining. But increasingly, the case for lab growing diamonds is getting even stronger. Labs across the world are growing diamonds with carbon-neutral status, which means no damage has been done to Earth at all!
But check this out – one of the emerging ways on the horizon to make diamonds is to literally pull them from the sky. You read that right! This method involves using new tech to capture excess carbon from the atmosphere and convert it into diamonds. That means new methods such as these aren’t even just content to be carbon neutral – because with this “It’s raining diamonds” process, we’re potentially talking carbon NEGATIVE. Meaning, that this could actually be a way to REDUCE pollution, and come out with gem-quality diamonds!
So, all told, it’s with great excitement that fine cultured diamonds jewellery brands are popping up everywhere, making notable and newsworthy efforts to change the way diamonds are sourced for our jewellery.
Just remember, if you’re in the market for anything fine jewellery, whether it’s for everyday wear, for a fancy evening out, or even for an engagement ring, you now have a choice in what method of diamond sourcing you want to support.

]]>Our aim from the very beginning has been to do luxury jewellery like no one has before – to be the first designer lab grown diamonds brand to only use grown diamonds and stones. No mining has ever taken place to create our award-winning collections, and no mining ever will.
We ship worldwide and are thrilled to have a dedicated customer base – one that has kept several of our lines regularly sold out. But our British brand factor is such a huge strand of our DNA. We’ve received press and celeb love from all over the world, but by far, the most support has come from the UK, which we call our home.
So, we thought, what better reason to celebrate that pride than to create a special offer in conjunction with the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II, which marks the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952. The British government has promised a "once-in-a-generation show" that will "mix the best of British ceremonial splendour and pageantry with cutting-edge artistic and technological displays."
This is the first time that any British monarch has celebrated a platinum jubilee, so we wanted to do something special by giving away a £50 voucher for orders over £275 in this special collection of festive Jubilee colours! Treat yourself to any of these gorgeous lab grown diamonds and stones pieces from Friday through Sunday, and as long as you spend at least £275, you’ll receive our discount. Just use the code PLATINUMJUBILEE at checkout!
Let’s take a look at some of these fabulously festive pieces. Shop the full collection!

]]>NOMAD’s design aesthetic is a thematic focus on nature, travel and the philosophy of living life as a free spirit
“Several pieces in NOMAD resemble the tip of a spear. The spear represents strength and protection,” Cristina Tosio remarked on the design inspiration. “For me, this NOMAD collection represents a powerful woman; a woman who fights for her beliefs – one of them being she is conscious and respectful of her environment. And that’s why I’m proud to use Lark & Berry’s lab-grown diamonds to create NOMAD, the best stones for the planet. It’s high jewellery for a woman of free spirit, going anywhere she wants, with her strength and self-confidence as her biggest weapons.”
Tosio has graced the covers of Elle, Vogue, Glamour and Harper's Bazaar
Cristina Tosio has spent the past 15 years travelling between Paris, London and NYC working with fashion's hottest photographers, like Peter Lindbergh, Mario Testino and Camilla Akrans. She’s also a premiere DJ and can be seen behind the tables at fashion industry events hosted by the likes of Harper's Bazaar and at Paris Fashion Week. And now, when her fans see her on the "1's and 2's" at these events, they'll no doubt be noticing her draped in her new collection of lab grown sapphires, grown diamonds and lab grown spinel!
“We loved Cristina’s ideas of women as strong, independent personalities and free spirits, looking for inspiration through wandering the world,” said Lark & Berry brand founder Laura Chavez. “Those ideas are closely bonded with our customers’ desires to self-gift our created diamonds and stones jewellery. So, this whole package of independence plus planet consciousness in the form of sustainable jewellery just really speaks to what Lark & Berry is about.”
Lark & Berry’s NOMAD collection, which includes earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings, will be available May 11th on the brand’s website
Like all of Lark & Berry's headline-making, disrupting and buzzworthy designer lab grown diamonds jewellery, the new NOMAD collection is available to order online from the brand's website and ships worldwide. The new collection will also be available in the brand's flagship Marylebone London store. Prices generally range £125 to £1,250.
But now, let's get into why you're here in the first place - to see some of the pieces from this new, lab grown diamonds luxury jewelry set!
NOMAD PENDANT - 18K GOLD VERMEIL WITH CULTURED SAPPHIRE
As a digital nomad with a true spirit of wanderlust travelling your country or the world looking for inspiration, capture your passion in the heart of this beautiful, sun-kissed lab grown orange sapphire centre-stone. Made with ever-shining 18K gold vermeil and shaped like the tip of a spear, this piece is sure to get anyone you encounter on your journey noticing you!
NOMAD DOUBLE NECKLACE - SILVER WITH RHODIUM CULTURED SPINEL AND SAPPHIRE
Double the inspiration in your traveller's heart by draping this eye-catching silver double necklace on your chest. The double spear tips here house the beautiful blue glimmer of lab grown spinel, at once reminding of a glistening lake you might encounter on a long hike - and that's no accident, these pieces were made for adventurers, those awed by the majestic sights and experiences found in the natural world around them.
NOMAD CRAWLER EARRINGS - SILVER WITH 18K GOLD VERMEIL CULTURED SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND
While living the travelling life, you never know who you might meet. Even though you're packing light, you don't want to find yourself without some classically inspired ear-wear for an impromptu, fancy night out! And for an occasion such as that, these crawlers would do just the trick. The pale shade colouring of these stunning lab grown sapphires and the dazzling dots of lab grown diamonds really make for a classy look. These come in lab-grown blue spinel as well!
NOMAD ROSE CUT SPINEL EARRINGS - SILVER WITH RHODIUM CULTURED SPINEL AND SAPPHIRE
Looking for something subtle but will still really make your ear game pop? Look no further than these magnificent luxury earrings studs in grown blue spinel. Whether you're looking for a first piercing, want these to be your only earrings, or you're looking to add something unique and new to your layered luxury diamond earrings piercing game, the deep ocean-blue of these studs should do the trick.
NOMAD DOUBLE BRACELET - SILVER WITH 18K GOLD VERMEIL CULTURED SAPPHIRE
Cristina Tosio is fascinated with talismans, those objects that hold special, or even mystical meaning to us. Here, she and Lark & Berry have doubled up on their spear-head inspired design to lay these dual amulets delicately on your wrist, inviting long gazes at these brilliant lab grown orange sapphires.
NOMAD DOUBLE BRACELET - SILVER WITH RHODIUM CULTURED SPINEL AND SAPPHIRE
If silver and blue are more your thing, the great news about Lark & Berry's new NOMAD collection is that there's a choice with every piece in either of the two color schemes. If you ask us, you can't go wrong with either - and what's even cooler? The fact that you can layer both options on your wrist for some amazing mixing and matching.
NOMAD SIGNET RING - SILVER WITH 18K GOLD VERMEIL CULTURED DIAMOND
And last but not least, let's take a look at NOMAD's sustainable luxury jewellery rings choices. It's rare that such a tiny diamond set in a relatively large gold expanse would have such maximum impact, but here we are. This lovely lab-grown diamond is tastefully centered on a wide plate of 18K gold vermeil. Show it off glamping, show it off at a dinner party, or really wow someone on a first date, even. No matter where you wear this piece, you're sure to get noticed!
NOMAD SIGNET RING - SILVER WITH RHODIUM CULTURED SPINEL
How about the silver and rhodium complement to yellow gold? We'd call this the decidedly edgier choice for those really looking to stand out. This baby blue dot of cultured spinel has us dreaming of swimming with dolphins, or seeing a little island out in the distance from our boat, not marked on any map, just waiting to be explored.
NOMAD - what the inspiration behind Lark & Berry's new adventurous, lab-made diamonds collection means today
When we hear the word "nomad," many of us with a sense of history may, of course, picture our ancient ancestors moving freely from one undiscovered section of Earth to another in search of... well, anything and everything.
That sense of searching and adventuring has prevailed... and evolved into a new way of navigating our modern lives
Fast forward about 8,000 years (when our nomadic ancestors were thought to have first began roaming the Earth) to now, and it could be said we've re-discovered our nomadic ways and put a new, modern sheen on it.
Let's rewind back not thousands of years, but just two - to when the Coronavirus was in its deepest throes, and many of us were forced by default to work from home. Now, in 2022, with most countries having fully (more or less) re-entered the fast pace of modern life, many companies kept their policies intact of letting us work from wherever we like, instead of having to return to an office.
Still desiring to make an impression, and a statement, with lab created diamonds jewellery while we're on the go
Point is, everything has changed. Even though many of us can work from anywhere now, we still want our modern conveniences, and we still want to look cool and make a fashion statement. Take all that into account, and add model Cristina Tosio's warrior-woman heart, and her fascinations with amulets and talismans, throw it all in a pot, mix it up, and you get Lark & Berry's NOMAD collection.
If, like us, you look at these pieces and feel this strange pull - that maybe there's some sort of ethereal, yet decidedly ancient and Earthly magic captured inside these shining stones of orange and blue - then you're thinking the very same things we were when we created them.
For over 15 years, Cristina Tosio's journeys through the world have made her acutely aware of the need to care for our planet
Much like Lark & Berry founder Laura Chavez, Cristina Tosio has always loved fine diamonds jewellery, but was not keen on putting her name on something that harmed the planet. It's the dangers of diamond mining of course that we're getting at, and Tosio was thrilled at the prospect of her first jewelry line utilising created diamonds and stones luxury jewellery. It's far and away the most sustainable luxury jewellery for Earth!
]]>Cocktail rings are rings worn on the outside of a cocktail dress. They aren't just diamond dinner rings anymore. They can come in a variety of metals/gemstones, like a cocktail ring in gold or sapphire cocktail rings. The shape is commonly circular, but can also be triangular or square. And now, there are even more unusual cocktail rings. The cocktail ring setting is often a diamond and gemstone at the center with smaller gems around it, although sometimes cocktail jewelry simply features one large gem in the design.
A women's cocktail ring is a term that can lead to some confusion over exactly what that is. Let's cover some of cocktail rings basics up front and a little more in-depth.
Which Hand to Wear a Cocktail Ring?
Cocktail ring design is a typically large, flamboyant and pronounced piece of jewellery worn on the middle finger or fourth finger of the right hand. Though these days, a cocktail ring style could even be mistaken for an engagement ring!
What Is A Cocktail Rings Meaning? Well, Let's Look at What ISN'T a Cocktail Ring...
Cocktail rings are mostly worn as bling - as statement rings, they're not typically rings associated with personal significance, like:
Promise Rings: These are usually more minimalist, not something like a diamond cocktail ring or a cocktail ring design featuring coloured sapphires. Promise rings are worn on the middle finger of your right hand and feature an inscription such as ‘true love waits' - this signifies a personal vow the wearer might have made to herself. These rings aren't meant for special occasions the way cocktail rings are.
Signet Rings: These are worn on the middle finger of your right hand and feature a family crest or coat of arms.
Both of the above types of rings could have characteristics reminiscent of cocktail rings, such as if they feature large stones. But they differ from cocktail rings because they're not pure bling.
History of Cocktail Rings
We've discussed what cocktail rings are, what cocktail rings aren't and what they typically represent. Let's dive into where they came from. The history of cocktail rings dates back centuries!
The discovery of gold and other precious gemstones in Egypt inspired elaborate jewellery design.
6,000 years ago, Egyptians made their first gold jewellery pieces. You can see the collections today whilst visiting The Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Much, much later, Elizabeth Taylor would go on to help popularize large statement pieces of this sort in Europe and the Americas by starring in Cleopatra. But these stunning Egyptian designs below were the real thing. And unlike later associations, with only the rich owning big jewellery, these Egyptian styles were favoured not just by the elite—but by commoners as well. Jewellery and fashion wouldn't be what it is (interesting!) if trends didn't keep cycling back. Now, today, you can even get 100% real diamonds in large, designer statement pieces at very accessible prices.
Fast forwarding in time a bit now - if your association with cocktail rings is that they’re large statement jewellery only worn by the elite or royalty, you’re probably thinking of the Middle Ages in Europe.
King Henry VIII was known for wearing a fistful of ruby cocktail rings and other ornate jewellery.
The term “cocktail rings” of course wasn’t used then, that would come later, but King Henry’s big bling would certainly prove to be influential in the future. When he ruled England (for nearly 40 years in the 1500’s), rubies were actually considered much more precious than diamonds. In a certain sense, that trend would re-surface later - as in now, in the present day, when couples, women and men are choosing more of a variety of gemstones rather than just diamonds. People choose cocktail sapphire inspired rings even for engagement rings now, more than ever before. But let's not get ahead of ourselves...
And don't give the crown of chief-cocktail-rings-future-influencer solely to Ancient Egyptian tradition, or even King Henry, just yet.
Queen Victoria Knew A Thing or Two About a Bold Statement Ring
Not to be out done, a lady really made her mark some 300 years after Henry’s reign. Queen Victoria was known as the “Grandmother of Europe” for her offspring marrying into many royal families. She was also less vain and headstrong as Henry, with an enduring reputation of having reconnected the throne with the public and performing many civic duties. And as far as being an early cocktail rings influencer? She wore an infamous emerald serpent ring, always wrapped around her finger; a cool, reptilian contrast to her outstanding character.
But how about some American influence? After all, it’s from the States that we got the term “cocktail ring,” which we’ll get to in a bit.
FDR Gets In On The Cocktail Rings Action
FDR was president of the United States from 1933 to 1945, so he was actually taking his ruby statement jewellery cues from the cocktail rings craze of the 20’s. While he was very revered in the states, he was also important to the UK. FDR was instrumental in forging the Special Relationship between the US and UK for his leadership during WWII. And on the fashion front? He made some waves there, too, with his his notable pinky ring. The ring was made of gold with a bloodstone centre and was engraved with the Roosevelt Family crest and the date “1853.”
So, it’s with that trip to the US to meet FDR, we examine 1920’s America.
Cocktail rings emerged during the Prohibition era in the 1920s as a way for women to show off their wealth and status.
Since alcohol was illegal at the time, these parties were often the only opportunity for people to let loose and enjoy themselves. These illegal parties held at speakeasy's were called “cocktail parties,” and it’s from that title that cocktail rings got their name.
As a result, cocktail rings became more extravagant during the 40s and 50s as a way to show off at these events. This modern ruby cocktail ring released recently from Lark & Berry is a nice throwback to the types of rings you might have come across at speakeasy's.
Prohibition Gave Birth to the Modern Cocktail Ring
After prohibition ended, society began to relax a bit more and partygoers started embracing opulence again. This led to cocktail rings becoming more extravagant than ever before. Rings often featured large diamonds or gemstones and were meant to be seen from across the room at cocktail parties.
The 80s is typically associated with spandex, big hair, and neon colors. It was also a time when cocktail rings were at their most popular. Bling rings were often worn with flashy outfits and made a bold statement. In 1981, Princess Diana famously married Prince Philip, and for the occasion, she actually chose her wedding ring from a catalogue - a cocktail ring statement piece featuring a blue sapphire.
Diana knew a cocktail ring style was an unconventional wedding ring choice, but what she didn't know is how influential a choice it would prove to be. It helped to keep cocktail rings in the limelight and even inspired brides to this day to make unconventional wedding ring choices.
Unconventional Cocktail Ring Statement Pieces are Trending Strong as Ever Today
Cocktail rings have remained popular since the 80s and are still often seen today. Though they may not be as flashy as they once were, these big rings still make a statement and are sure to turn heads. Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, upon getting engaged, famously chose a dual statement ring featuring each of the couple's birthstones - certainly a far cry from the typical white solitaire diamond ring. Here it is, credit of Machine Gun Kelly's Instagram:
Blake Lively married Ryan Reynolds in 2012, and didn't go with a classic diamond wedding ring
She instead decided on a statement cocktail ring featuring an oval-shaped flawless light-pink diamond weighing 7 carats, set in rose gold with pavé-set diamonds along the band. Gaudy wedding rings are in! Here's Lively even more recently from a red carpet event. One gaze at her ring-bling shows she still favours chunky statement wear:
Cocktail rings are a trend that show no sign of slowing.
As we mentioned, they're not just for statement evening wear any longer. Now, couples are even favouring coloured gemstones like sapphires as cocktail engagement ring options, or like Megan Fox, dual gemstones.
Trends are changing now, fast as ever. The most common wedding ring is still a diamond ring, but cocktail ring men such as FDR showed in the past what is even more true now - that a cocktail ring setting, cocktail ring design - anything you choose, can be as different as you want it to be these days. Whether it's men or women wearing cocktail rings, and whether for only bling and statement or for their wedding, coloured gemstones are becoming an even more popular choice, and rings of personal significance are a huge now too.
Intrigued by the idea of going with a non-conventional cocktail ring for your wedding but need help? We suggest sitting down with a Bespoke designer, who can design a ring based on your inspirations and ideas and even meet your budget.
]]>That’s why we decided to partner with carbon dioxide and air capture technology company Climeworks for the entirety of this month. How does it work? Well, for every £5,000 we sell in April, Lark & Berry will remove 65kg of excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in partnership with Climeworks.
That means all you have to do to help is shop with us, and through buying cultured diamonds (also known as lab grown diamonds) luxury jewellery, you’re not only making the best diamonds choice for our planet, but you’re helping to clean our air!
Climeworks uses a technology called 'direct air capture' to capture carbon dioxide directly from the air. As you may know, the major threat from increased CO2 in our atmosphere is the greenhouse effect. As a greenhouse gas, excessive CO2 creates a cover that traps the sun's heat energy in the atmospheric bubble, warming the planet and the oceans.
Climeworks was founded in 2009 and is now the leader in direct air capture (DAC) technology. The company’s first direct air capture plant launched in 2017, and they now have 15 machines in operation, with the world’s first large-scale plant switched on in Iceland in September 2021. To date, the Iceland plant, called the Orca carbon capture plant, is the largest direct air capture facility in the world, capturing 4,000 tons of CO2 per year.
We’re excited to add Climeworks to our growing roster of companies like One Tree Planted who we work in collaboration with to help combat the ravages of climate change. And we’re so thankful to all of your for supporting these efforts by purchasing jewellery with cultured diamonds, by far the most sustainable diamonds for our planet!
]]>Designed by Lark & Berry, the necklace features 64.5 carats of carbon-neutral diamonds created in the high-tech labs of Diamond Foundry. The pairing of Lark & Berry’s award-winning, timeless design with Diamond Foundry’s US- made diamonds makes for the most stunning sustainable jewels currently on the market.
100% of the money from this massive sale went to the Elton John AIDS Research Foundation!
"I was amazed at the price our necklace fetched!” exclaimed our founder Laura Chavez. “I am just in awe, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that our creation was able to bring that much money for such a good cause. Our whole Lark & Berry team here in London is honoured that Billy was able to send the Supernova off in such style and grace."
Billy was on hand to co-host this star-studded event with Lady Ga Ga and others. Elton John couldn't make it in person this year due to a prior concert commitment, but there was a big who's-who list of celebs on hand.
The hosts presented to nearly 800 guests, including Zooey Deschanel, Donatella Versace, Chrissy Metz, Heidi Klum, Christina Hendricks, Chris Pine, Kathy Hilton, Caitlyn Jenner, Tinx and many more. Billy was also key in aiding the actual auctioning of the Supernova necklace, which was a fitting goodbye, in a sense, as we felt like he made this very special piece his own from the moment he popped out on stage wearing it at the Oscars 2020 singing “I’m Still Standing” with Elton and others.
“When Elton throws a party, he throws a party with purpose.…I’m here for the 37 million people living with HIV, including me,” Yahoo News quoted Billy saying from the stage at the event. “I’m lucky to be living in a community that loves and supports me, but not everyone has that luxury.”
When the time came to auction our Supernova necklace, Billy was more than ready to help in the task.
“Y’all ready to bid on this bitch?” Yahoo quoted Billy as saying when showing the necklace. “You know I can’t afford it, they lent it to me. But I know you bitches out here can afford it. Get your checkbooks out, do we still say that?”
Luckily, he was right, someone could afford it, and pay big-time, they did! Thanks Billy for all you do, and in our minds, the Supernova Necklace will always be yours and yours alone.
